Single Malt
Highland Park
Many experts rate 21-year-old Highland Park as one of the best examples from this popular distillery. Originally created exclusively for global travel retail and duty free markets, this whisky was named Best Single Malt of the Year at the World Whisky Awards 2009. Released in October 2007, Highland Park 21 is a full-flavoured, powerful, sweet single malt with a rich smoky finish.
This bottle was part of a private collection - if you'd like more detailed photos just get in touch!
Sweet sherry with a hint of balsamic, wrapped around a toffee centre.
Well-structured sweetness; aniseed balls and muscovado sugar with some smoke and apple crumble.
Spicy raisins with the aniseed lingering for a drawn out, exotic note.
A lovely dram that shows off the best elements of this very popular distillery.
Simply amazing dram. Full bodied, flavourful sherry influence, with light peat as part of the backstory.
On opening, the dominant note was orange and dried fruit. Nice but not my favorite. Half way through bottle, huge complexity develops. Mainly, more toffee, vanilla and butterscotch develop with air (amongst many other flavors). Well integrated, complex, could sit down with this for hours - except that it becomes very drinkable! Side by side with HP18, I found the 18 to be more toffeed and the 21 to be more orange/dried fruit (all with a nice vegetal peaty back drop). Might be worth splitting the bottle in half early on to hasten the oxidation (I recall the first third being disappointing for the price paid).
One of my favorites!
Tried this and the HP18. This one is clearly better; more well rounded with added complexity and depth. Sweet, spice and with a wiff of smoke. 94/100
Highland Park continues their great line-up with their 21 y.o. This very bold yet very balanced whisky is one of my favorite daily drinkers.
