Orkeny's Highland Park distillery introduced a trio of Travel Retail market bottlings in 2018, with names based off of creatures important in Viking lore. This particular expression is the Loyalty of the Wolf, a 14 year old single malt drawn from sherry-seasoned American oak casks.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose

Toasted bread with marmalade, red apple, some punchy peat hints.

Palate

Barley, thyme honey and more marmalade. Smoke lingers in the background. Some Christmas spices give it heat.

Finish

Pecan, dry peat and cinnamon sticks.

A nice easy drinkable dram, designed for the duty free marketplace I feel. Therein lies my problem with it. I'm not saying it's a bad whisky, it's just a little bland for my jaded palate other people may well decide it's the finest tipple they've ever encountered. One review I read on Highland Park in general is of the opinion that there's more emphasis on marketing the fact that the Orkney Isles look more to their Scandinavian heritage than being Scottish. I find myself tending to agree.

Nice surprise

I can’t understand the poor reviews on this whisky. I bought this from JFK airport as I knew I’d tried a previous Highland Park and liked it. Great on the nose and sweet on the palette. A very moorish whisky. I would definitely buy this again.

Mmm orange marmalade

Sweet nose with touch of peat. Sherried and complex. Orange marmalade with burnt sugar on the palate, but oak, spices, malt and herbs appearing. You really have to stop and think through the complexity of the palate and the finish. This is a great step up from HP12 I found watery and disappointing.

Worth a try and not what I was expecting

I will preface this by saying my favourite whiskies are from laphroiag, ardbeg and springbank. It is not the 12 year, and I think it has suffered a bit in online ratings because people are expecting something similar. It is light and sweet. It is slightly vegetative, fermented but fresh on the nose (forgive me for sounding pretentious) and the lightness in the mouth matches. The finish is ever so slightly smokey but the experience is so light it reminds me of a vanilla Japanese sponge cake. If your aren't into smoke or peat I think you would enjoy this. I got this for just over twenty quid for 35cl in a duty free (I was staying somewhere for a short period). I think it was worth it, especially as it was a pleasant surprise. Personally I find the 12 year nothing to write home about, and would rather have a bottle of kilkerran. This is playing a different ball game and has got me interested in HPs other offerings (which is exactly what the travel segment is for).

Soooo Tasty

Very nice dram from Highland Park. Lovely balance between sweetness & smoke. You can't go wrong with these guys.
