Darkness! Highland Park Bottling Note

A 24 year old Highland Park finished for over three months in a tiny, specially rebuilt, fresh, first-fill 50 litre Pedro Ximénez Sherry cask! The small size of the cask creates greater interaction in a shorter space of time, meaning that this malt has taken on plenty of rich Sherried goodness. Enough, in fact, to call itself Darkness!

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Floral at first, heather and violet, before you're engulfed by the Darkness! Chocolate raisins, Campino, red lace liquorice and prunes. Chocolatey scorched earth.

Palate: Orange peel entry before thick, chewy red toffee apple and flaky chocolate.

Finish: Flourless cocoa cake, oak and toffee pennies.

Overall: Woah. It's going to take a while to adjust to the light after that!

Darkness! Highland Park 24 Year Old Pedro Ximénez Cask Finish Reviews

More smoke, less range, more intriguing.

I have a bottle of this and I was going to reserve it indefinitely. That was until I tried a sample of it. What I remember was definitely Highland Park. It was wet on the front and dry on the finish. The sherry fused with the mild smoke to somehow make it more intense. I do remember it masking some of the honey and sweeter characteristics of the stuff. This made it less complex on the palate, and obviously less favorable. What I love the most about HP is the range of notes and flavor. And though I love sherried whiskies, it may be a detriment to the Highland Park. Smoke is most of what gets through. That being said, I REALLY want to open my only bottle and explore it more! If you want a Highland Park get one, if you want a Sherry bomb try Glendronach, if you're bored and have the dough, give this one a go.

Bruiser. Absolute bruiser.

I'm never quite sure what to expect with highland park, but this particular example is an absolute beast of a whisky. There's lots of smoke (but not actually that much peat), and an assembled cast of savoury, sweet, and super-dense Umami secondary players. Cracking dram.

Excellent, but not excellent value

This is a great dram - I tried a 3cl sample, and if money was no object I'd buy a bottle. It's full of flavour and complexity, and with water a lovely sweetness.

But it suffers from not being (to my taste) obviously better than some excellent competition at less than half the price. If sherry and peat is your thing, try Lagavulin Distillers Edition, Talisker Distillers Edition or Ardbeg Uigeadail - you can get all 3 for the same price as this.

THE DARK SIDE!

This is not for the faint of heart. It is liquid gold! Just the right balance of sweet and peat in a thick and chewy dram. It is a mouth full of flavor immediately.
