Boy howdy, sure does smell like darn good rye whiskey around these parts! Well golly, no wonder it does when there's High West Rendezvous Rye from Utah up in here!
With a very high rye content in its mash bill, Rendezvous Rye is an authentic, spicy blend of that makes one heck of a Manhattan as well as being brilliant by itself.
Rustic notes of oak and fruit, a little menthol. Slightly grassy, followed by sweeter notes of toffee and classic vanilla.
Oak spices, pepper and even some chillies. Needles to say, it's rather spicy. Deep inside you'll find a little treasure cove of sweetness, but then it's back to the savoury notes from the nose.
The heat continues from the palate (how could it not?) with fresh oak and tea leaves.
A surprising rye whiskey, unique and very enjoyable.
Not bad, the younger of the 2 rye's in the blend could be a tad less rough around the edges but with the older sweeter rye balaces it nicey makin it feel more like a black pepper heat than a fusile one. And when I say sweet the older rye is really sweet. Overall this is sweet, the rye bread notes are subdued, with a big cracked black peper hit & medium to short finish. MoM confirmed to me the vintige I bought recently was btl'd in 2017, a word of warning though if you do your research online batches btl'd from 2021 onwards have had the older rye in the blend nered in age...
Rendezvous Rye was recommended to me by my local specialist whisky retailer -- and it didn't disappoint! I've bought several bottles since (although it's getting harder to find over here). It's served me well both as a sipping whisky and in cocktails.
medicinal overtones should not be allowed on the top shelf. I don't know where they get off charging what they do for this bottle. it in no way compares with a russels reserve single barrel 110proof for example. I would avoid blends altogether if that is what the problem is here. at this point in my whiskey drinking career I've only liked the knobb creek 100 rye, but I won't be going back to rye I don't think it is for me.
This is a superb rye whiskey. For some reason is becoming increasingly difficult to find in Australia —- mifune Grambas
