The Glenrothes 12 Year

12 year old single malt from the Glenrothes distillery, released as part of the Soleo Collection. This range takes its name from the process of sun-drying grapes in Jerez for sherry production, so it shouldn't come as a surprise that sherried deliciousness is a focus here. Also noteworthy is the lack of vintage on the label, with Glenrothes decides to eschew them in favour of age statements for the majority of the series.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose Gingerbread, stewed apple and earthy vanilla, then soft tropical fruit notes and a hint of sherried funk.

Palate Creamy hazelnut, dried fruit and a hint of cinnamon. Hints of chocolate, old leather, dried herbs and tobacco add depth among Galia melon and honeyed oak.

Finish Long and sweet with a touch of baking spice and more stewed fruits.

Overall A perfect introduction to all things that make Glenrothes fantastic.

Reviews for The Glenrothes 12 Year Old
Value for money
Great sherried dram, prefer it over its Macallan 12 sherries oak cousin

I like it!
This is one of my favourites, a really nice flavour, not too harsh or peaty, I don't know enough to compare to lots of others but it hits the mark.

Will not purchase again.
Very disappointed with this whisky, over priced, better younger malts at half the price. Lacks any maturity for a 12 year old.

Not value for money.
It’s nice enough to drink but it’s not a £40 whisky. At that price there’s many whiskys that are far superior. Kilkerran, Deanston, Arran and Glencadam are way better and can be cheaper.

Like cinnamon, love this
One of the nices whiskys to just sit and sip with a hint of cinnamon

Totally not worth it
I just don’t understand why you would bother. The makers cut is seven pounds more and rivals the glendronach 15! Then you have the berry bros and Rudd sherry cask which uses Glenrothes and has a much longer finish with real depth of flavour and is ten pounds cheaper than this. It’s pretty poor. There are so much better 12 year olds out there for the cash. Check out glen Garioch 12, Blair Athol 12 and bunnahabhain 12. Even Aberlour 12 is better. Or for the same cash, clynish 14! But my advise, get the makers cut instead!

Nothing special
Not too bad, but it has this disturbing artificial sweetness in the taste.
Will not purchase this again.

Best of the Soleo
Now THIS is what I expect from Glenrothes. Smooth, creamy vanilla. Beautifully balanced. Definite keeper
