Glenmorangie Companta Bottling Note

STRICTLY 1 PER CUSTOMER

The Glenmorangie Companta is the 2014 Private Edition release from the Northern Highlands distillery, following on from Ealanta, which was named as World Whisky of the Year 2014 by Jim Murray. After an initial maturation in American white oak ex-bourbon barrels, the Companta was matured in 60% Burgundy wine casks from Clos de Tart and 40% Rhône Valley casks that previously held Rasteau, sourced by Glenmorangie's Director of Distilling, Dr. Bill Lumsden. The result is an exceedingly well made cherry red, non chill-filtered single malt that fits perfectly into the continuing range of experimental releases from Glenmorangie.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Heady, fruity nose with notes of chocolate and spice. Then comes an umami-like delivery of truffles and the forest floor. Bill specifically wanted this character to shine through in the whisky, and it does, beautifully. The typical red berry notes arrive a little later, developing slowly with hints of toasted almond.

Palate: Huge palate, far “bigger” than one would expect from the abv. There is a massive spice note, then something akin to chewing on pipe tobacco – sweet and savoury all at once. Black pepper comes through in a big way. Hints of sherbet, ginger, stewed prunes and then molasses. It’s quite chocolatey too, and tremendously complex.

Finish: Sweet, very long finish with hints of clove oil on the tail. A hint of muscovado sugar develops, a touch of chestnut mushroom too. It remains oily and mouth-coating for minutes.

Overall: Astonishing - one of finest red wine finished whiskies we've ever come across (and we're not always fans of these). Highly recommended.

User Reviews of the Glenmorangie Companta Private Edition

Stellar expression of a red wine finished malt

Very complex, rich dark flavors of dried fruit and an almost roasted undertone. You get a sense of rustic-ness with this, very calming and truly sublime.

Could have been great...

Just a word of warning - I have a bottle that I believe to be sulphured. What would otherwise be a fantastic bottle has left me with a sour taste in my mouth...

Wonderful

Not a long time drinker of Scotch. Mostly Bourbon. However this is one of the most flavorful drams I have had the pleasure of running across. Fruits and chocolate come to front for me. Very tasty. I will be running down a few more of these.

Very complex, very complete.

Wow, this whisky blew me away. Very complex, multiple layers. It seems like a sherry matured whisky but at the same time it's not. There is something unique about it. Dried fruits, spice, sweetness from malt, orange and chocolate covered toffee. I'm so happy to have bought a bottle, too bad it was strictly one per customer. They've done it again, Glenmorangie Private Ed now consists of many unique and wonderful whiskys.
