    Glenmorangie A Tale Of Winter

Following on from Glenmorangie's A Tale of Cake, the magnificent distillery has gone and created Glenmorangie A Tale of Winter (we do like the idea that "cake" is in fact a season and that it precedes winter, but we don't think that's what they're going for here)! Director of whisky creation Dr. Bill Lumsden wanted to evoke the feeling of winter, of sitting in front of a fireplace while the snow fall outside, and to do so, he finished a bourbon barrel-matured single malt in ex-Marsala wine casks. All those rich, comforting, chocolatey notes certainly put this one in the 'winter warmer' category.

    Not a winters night dram…..

Well let’s see here, this is not the dram I think of sitting by the hearth watching logs snap and crackle on a cold snowed winters might. I’m sorry but I think Dr Bill Lumsden has not pulled this one off. Over all it claws the mouth and is soapy and has some nice flavours but it’s just ruined by that soapy clawyness (if that’s a word). Taste is subjective so I’m just giving my opinion and I will be staying far away from this expression. If any Glenmorangie expression is best for those cold winter nights I vote for Glenmorangie signet in fact I’m sat by the fire drinking a dram of this after trying this one again for this review……

    A warming winter dram

A deep hazlenut brown in appearance, this whisky is viscous in the glass, good legs down the side after the initial swirl. The nose is sweet, spicy and complex. Initially there's a huge impact of creme brulee- vanilla and burnt brown sugar. Under that there's some all-spice, cinder toffee and rich dark fruit. On the initial taste it hits with deep ginger, your tongue immediately tingles with spice and waters. The cinder/burnt toffee then takes over - spiced Crunchie bars springs to mind. It has a nutty background, little almond and walnut. The finish is very long, the spice turns to mild ginger and cinnamon with a hint of clove, very festive. The stewed fruit comes back with deep cocoa and a jammy dodger raspberry note. The perfect dram for a cold winter's night? Not quite, but close.
