Glenfarclas
Scotland
Single Malt
Glenfarclas’ stunning 40 year old whisky launched during the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival 2010. It offers all of the sherried Glenfarclas character and exceptional maturity too.
This bottle was part of a private collection - if you'd like more detailed photos just get in touch!
Very complex and rich. Calves leather, cedar wood cigar boxes and cocoa kicking things off. Then we’re onto waves of sweet sherry and chocolate orange, marmalade and butterscotch. Hints of molasses develop and just a whisper of pepper.
About as rich and intense as anything we’ve ever tried from Glenfarclas. The chocolate richness develops in the glass, with notes of chocolate raisins, dates and figs, orange and maraschino cherry. Then spices and thick espresso coffee.
Sublimely concentrated waves of mochaccino and gingerbread, with deep leathery notes clinging to the end.
We’re left speechless! It’s overwhelmingly good…

Honest to goodness, a beautiful scotch. Never mind what it says on the tin - I liked this from the very first sip. It's rich and beautiful to savour. I like it better than numerous younger (20-30 yr) bottles from other distilleries - with similar price tags!
Just had the pleasure of a Glenfarclas tasting session at Hedonism Wine in London and the 40yr blew me away. Fantastic, smooth, rich and warming. I think this is the best of the range. It reminds me a little of a Highland Park 25 - leather chairs and warmth. The best thing about the 40 year old?...the price. Yes, I know it's a premium bottle and still a fair dip into the wallet but when you compare to others of the age I think it's good value. The fact that the Company has specifically bottled in a very basic way (it hardly stands out) to keep costs down should indicate that the value really is in the liquid.
This is a truly supreme libation. A 40 year old at this price is amazing, mind you the 15 year old is also delicious and priced at a relative snip to this.
There was the 40 year old 105 (cask strength at 60%) that came out a few years back. Or check out the Family Casks. All much more expensive mind you - this really is a true bang for your buck solid guaranteed 90+ point whisky. And 46% ain't bad (many casks this old are around that anyway...)
So very rich, so very refined and an absolute delight. Twice now I've ended a whisky tasting night with a glass of this and both times I've found it easily equalling and surpassing the ones I've had before even though the competition hasn't exactly been either shy or young. 9/10 (10/10 is reserved for a cask strength version of this should one ever come out)
