    Glenfarclas 12 Year Old

Lots of sherry and fruit in this, Glenfarclas 12 was originally bottled for export and travel retail markets. In 2006, it was named the "Best Sherried Whisky" in the Single Malt World Cup, and in 2007 and 2008 it won Gold at the Stockholm Beer and Whisky Festival.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

Light and creamy with a mix of supple, soft sherry and Manuka honey. Gentle and well-balanced, there are hints of smoke, rich oak, and a little pine resin.

    Palate

Medium-bodied, with notes of date and walnut cake, Oloroso sherry and hints of earthy forest floor. A beautiful note of malt, with toffee apple and a touch of smoke.

    Finish

Spicy and long, notes of allspice, cinnamon and cloves, with orange zest and sherry.

    In another category of whisky

I went to the liquor store looking for the 15 year old and to my disappointment they only has the 10, 12, and a 1973 family cask for $770. Needless to say I bought the 12. It's really an incredible whisky and has such a smooth, thick, and rich flavor. The finish is spectacular and it really tastes like you're drinking a bowl of butterscotch and vanilla pudding that was mixed together. It's probably the favorite in my collection which is why I'm giving it a 10. I know there's probably better whisky out there to find (such as older expressions of glenfarclas), but until I taste them, this is at the top of my list. Add a small amount of water and it will be the smoothest whisky you've tasted and the sweetness will explode.

    One of my favorites

I love the dry, nutty finish. Excellent before dinner with a few drops of water.

    My Favorite,so far...

I've just bought a bottle of 105 and I really prefer the 12 yo. It is my go to whiskey when I'm in the mood for something w/o peat. I love the dry, nutty finish. I'm still trying to find the 15 yo. The 17 yo is available here, but it's a little out of my price range.

    Excellent 12

Complex to the point of being mysterious. I finished a bottle over the course of a month and was sad to see it end. I felt like there was still more to discover. Recommend starting with a couple rocks on the first try and dialing back to neat on subsequent drams to really get a feel for it. Definitely worth repeating.

Great introduction to the Glenfarclas style

In a blind tasting of a handful of 12 year olds, I truly think I'd be able to pick out the Glenfarclas. It just has that much character. The sherry butts lend a depth and complexity to the whisky that's pretty special. I'm a big fan of Glenfarclas overall, but this 12 YO is proof you don't have to completely empty the wallet to enjoy the quality of their range. Oh, I love the 15 and 17 year old expressions, and the 21 is amazing, perhaps my favorite overall, if cost were not a factor, but with an eye on the price/quality ratio. the 12 really stands out. I'm fortunate enough to live where I can easily pick up a full liter of Glenfarclas 12 on a duty-free island for under US$25 a bottle, the equivalent of paying US$17 for a 700mL bottle. Would be a bargain at twice the price. Love the fresh, sherried notes on this dram -- one of the boldest and fullest 12 I've sampled. It's not incredibly smooth, yet I'd never call it harsh. It's perhaps assertive, aware of its own unique character and unapologetic for it. Some time in the glass definitely relaxes this whisky -- opens it up, smooths it out. it There's a bit of fruit and honey on the palate, and perhaps even a bit of oak and peat at first, but that actually went away with just a few minutes' time (either that or the ice). Nice lengthy finish, too (once again, diminished with the addition of ice), a bit surprising for a 12 year old. Highly recommended.
