The Singleton of Glendullan 38 Year Old 1976 (Special Release 2014)

2014 marks the first time the Singleton of Glendullan has been released as part of Diageo's Special Release. Exciting stuff, especially considering this is a 38 year old single malt, matured in re-fill European oak casks, bottled at an impressive 59.8% ABV. 3,756 bottles were produced.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

Vanilla toffee oak, geranium, grasses, some white pepper and fresh vanilla. (The aforementioned Toby was upset I didn't initially include his note of the night here: pencil shavings akin to a demerara rum.)

    Palate

Warming up front before relaxing entirely with waxy, gentle oak notes, a touch of melon and some venerable wood spices.

    Finish

    Salivating oakiness.

    Overall

A nice old chap of a whisky, it's aged oak note-driven and it's done very well.

Strong, with a very long finish

I am not a Scotch expert. I am a normal gentleman that has tried several Single Malt Whiskeys in restaurants, and wants to learn more. To do that I recently purchased 10 samples. At least one was from each region of Scotland. I had no regard for price. The goal was to try some very fine Whiskeys. I wanted to learn. This review is based on that. I am giving each sample 5 stars simply because they are all fine whiskeys and my pallet is not refined enough to make a 1-5 judgement. To me this was Very strong. Then I noticed that it is almost 60% so now I understand. Drinking this strength of Whiskey requires you to take into account the strength. I found it to be Very flavorful, with a very long finish. The taste was great but almost overpowering. Very smooth considering it's strength.
