GlenDronach
Single Malt
Scotland
If sherried single malt is very much your thing, then GlenDronach is a name you should get to know very well. The distillery resides in the Highlands, busily working away on some incredible expressions, with sherried malt sitting at the core of many of them. This particular dram, The GlenDronach 12 Year Old, is allowed to age in a combination of Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez casks from Spain, resulting in generous helpings of dried fruit and Christmas spice running through it.
Please note: We're afraid we can't guarantee which vintage you will receive. It'll still be yummy GlenDronach no matter the vintage, mind!
Rich cereals, struck match, raisin, cinnamon, caramelised sugar. Opens with some sweeter PX and lots of delicious raw ginger before becoming creamier with hazelnuts.
Fruits, peels, buttery. Pain au chocolat, a little marmalade on toast before becoming firmer and nuttier with spiced raisins.
Smoky toffee and nut brittle.
I've read a few negatives on this whisky and the only conclusion I can come to is that they were written by those that drink Bells or Teachers. This is an absolutely delicious whisky that is crammed full with all the festive fruits of a christmas cake. It has a sweet honey taste with a bundle of candied fruits thrown in. There's a nice spicy kick of ginger, cinnamon and nutmeg that's finished off with a well rounded sherry cask taste. It's literally christmas pudding in a bottle. Gorgeous!
By the looks of it, it is a quality whisky with great texture. Oily, sticks to the glass. Nice nose with fortified wine, apple pie, raisins and caramel. Not overly sweet on the palate, but the flavours are well put together. Spicy finish, raisin aftertaste (as expected from sherry casks). Overall, a solid product, so I disagree with the half a star review below. Not only it is drinkable, but it is better than. However, my personal choice would be Bunnahabhain Stiùireadair.
Somehow its taste like a marriage of whisky & cognac.
I live in an Asian mega city and sometimes I can get the older vintages. I think I just got the new stock. It’s awful. “sherry bomb”? Don’t make me laugh
This is the perfect malt for the non purest like me. The sherry casking just gives it an adorable glow and texture.
