Following on from its Peated Port Wood Finish, GlenDronach have released another sumptuous single malt that has enjoyed a rest in Port casks. This particular expression is a 10 year old whisky, initally aged in Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso sherry casks before being finished in Port pipes from Portugal's Douro valley.
Huge helpings of dried fruit, mixed with aromatic oak and strawberry jam.
Brandied cherries, blackcurrant and chocolate digestive biscuits.
Honey, biscotti, raisin and orange zest.
I don’t see an age statement on my bottle, but I’d believe 10 years. It’s darker than the 12 year bottle, but I assume that’s due to the port cask finishing (since Glendronach is one of the very few Scotch brands that doesn’t add caramel color, which is deceptive any way you try to spin it). As expected, it’s fruitier than the original, and “spicier” but not in a burning sort of way. If I had to name one complaint, it’d be the price. I’m not sure why it’s nearly twice the price of the original 12 year sherry cask aged, but it’s not twice as good. I wouldn’t buy it again at $98, but I would buy it at $70.
Wow! Sublime - from the Russian gold colour to the xmas pudding (sans brandy!) upfront to the salty caramel at the back, this is a winner! A real treat.
Insane GREAT whisky ....maybe the best 10 year ever made atlest in my eyes!
I live in Kansas, USA, and I love port wines. Being a whiskey girl, I really really really would love to try this Glendronach 10yo Port! I only offered 4.5 stars as I can't get it here... :-(
Amazing single malt for the price. Warm and sweet with a lively, lovely finish. Such a great dram to relax with.
