Glen Scotia
Scotland
Single Malt
What happens when you take an already delicious bourbon barrel matured Campbeltown single malt from Glen Scotia distillery and then finish it in first-fill Guyanese Demerara rum barrels? You get this tasty treat, that's what. Double the cask, double the flavour is the theory here, but this process also has historical precedence. Glen Scotia has records that go as far back as 1815, before the distillery was founded, that show casks of rum present and for sale in the town.
Seaspray coats brown sugar, charred pineapple, and cinnamon.
Thick molasses is joined by other notes you'd expect from a combo of bourbon and rum casks like desiccated coconut, banana, vanilla, nutmeg, and stone fruits.
More of those maritime notes and aromatic spice.
£3.96 - £27.95
The rum finish adds a bit of spice to the regular Double cask, but I get the impression they're using younger whisky to formulate it. This has a bit of that tingly, young whisky feel on the tongue, and the finish is quite short. As a 12-year-old this would probably work better. Overall, I prefer the standard Double Cask.
I was disappointed by this expression. It is definitely too young and the rum maturation does not add any complexity (possibly kept for a really short period of time). Definitely avoid.
Lovely addition to the range. Plenty of that wonderful Campbeltown funk on the nose. The interplay between the rum and bourbon casks really works. Nice that they’ve opted for natural colour too.
I bought this as a fan of Glen Scotia and Campbeltown Whiskies and I was not disappointed. If you like an interesting finish I would definitely recommend it
How I wish there were more opportunities to sample stuff before you commit to a full bottle purchase. I’m a big fan of Glen Scotia but this really doesn’t work. It’s too muddled and the double cask can’t take the rum. The 15 might have been able to hold its own a bit, but this is very poor. Wish I didn’t have 3 quarters of it left!
