The 12 year old core bottling from the Glen Scotia distillery, there are now just two other distilleries in Campbeltown. Glen Scotia has actually halted production, though they continue to mature their whisky.
Dark and pungent, charcoal. Slightly phenolic, hint of tar. Oily, touch of dry ropes.
Supple, full, rich peat, sweet, tangy fruit, wood.
Long, spice, blossom, herbal.
An excellent whisky. Salty sea-air, briney, oily and a touch of ginger. Imagine what it would have been like at 46% and unchillfiltered! Still, a lovely outdoor dram on a bracing day.
Honestly I got this one blind. I was interested in the history of Campbeltown and wanted to try something new... I wasn't expecting much more than a run of the mill 12 yr, but I got a nicely peated maritime dram with a lingering finish that seemed more aged than 12 years. This won't be my last bottle.
