The Diageo Special Releases 2018 collection features a single malt Scotch usually reserved for sale in the far east. Feast your eyes on The Singleton of Glen Ord, a complex dram thanks to the five-cask maturation process it undergoes across 14 years. It was aged initially in ex-sherry European oak and ex-bourbon refill American oak casks before it was moved to ex-Pedro Ximénez and Moscatel casks. Finally, it was married together in European oak puncheons before it was bottled at a cask strength 57.6% ABV.
Dusty florals jump out first: there's rose, magnolia and primrose. Then there's loads of red apple, dark fruit and almost Port-like notes. Honey comes through, too.
Smooth and gently mouth-coating, with plum, pineapple and liquorice notes. Not dissimilar to those old-school Cola Cube sweeties. Bit of a burnt character, along with a savoury pastry vibe.
Long, full of fruit with a slightly smoky note right at the end.
Fruity, waxy and robust. Tasty.
