Cider Cask Project Whisky

An interesting first release in Glen Moray’s new Elgin Curiosity range, this single malt Scotch whisky was matured in casks that were previously used to hold Thistly Cross Scottish craft cider. While other countries have used cider casks to finish or age whisky, this is the first instance of a Scotch being officially matured in a cider cask due to the fact that they are not technically permitted within Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) guidelines. However, the distillery has defended this choice as the cask used here was initially a whisky barrel that was sent to Thistly Cross (the two brands have had a barrel exchange programme since 2013). Thistly Cross used the casks to create its whisky-finished cider and sent them back. Glen Moray then matured this whisky in the casks, in an experimental first. Whichever way you look at this cider cask use, it's certainly innovative!
