Glen Moray Cabernet Elgin Bottling Note

A no age statement cask-finished single malt from Glen Moray, this fruity expression was released as part of the Elgin Classic bottling series. Initially matured in oak, the Speysider was then transferred to casks which previously held Cabernet Sauvignon wine for a finishing period. Because of the dark red fruit notes from the finish, we reckon this would do well as a postprandial sipper alongside some dark chocolate.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Apple turnover, plum, caramelised nuts and citrus blossom, with honeyed orchard fruits.

Palate: Green oak and some grassy notes, with red grape skin, lemon drizzle, white pepper and chocolate-covered almond.

Finish: Oak char and orange peel lead into plump raisin and cinnamon.

Glen Moray Cabernet Cask Finish - Elgin Classic Reviews

Great for those just entering WhiskyLand.

An easy-to-like whisky with just the proper amount of burn and no complex layering. It is approachable. I would suggest it makes a fine starter purchase for those interested in entering the world of Scotch whisky. From there, move along to the Glen Moray Sherry Finish and then to the 15-year-old Elgin Classic.

Inexpensive & easy single malt.

It's a cheap and cheerful range, which I quite like, and this is one of my favourites, along with the Sauternes Cask Finish.

I'd add sweet, dark berry fruit, on the palate, and a finish of soft caramel, in milk chocolate, to the Chaps' tasting notes, above.

The bluff, old traditionalists might sneer at the lack of an age statement and 40% strength but, at this price-point, it's pretty good. Perhaps I'd take the Auchentoshan American Oak, or the Speyburn 10yo, ahead of this, but not much else, for a similar price.
