A youthful bottling from the Glen Garioch distillery, aged in bourbon casks. This 8 year old was the first official release since the distillery reopened in 1997.
Quite green and grassy. Fresh peat. Soft hay, cereals, tangy zest.
Rich, winter spice, malt. Wood smoke, walnut.
Quite long, coffee, honey on buttered toast, touch of bitter dark chocolate on the tail.
Recently I was comparing Glen Garioch 8yo to Glenfiddich 12yo. Both excellent, in the same price range, but Glen Garioch won me by surprise. If you like peat, this is an affordable smoke, old fashioned whisky for you, with an extremely well balanced and mature taste. I like its opening on the palate, very broad, memorable, distinguished, but no spikes, and its finish is long, really to enjoy without having to sip and encourage the after-taste. A real bargain.
Not one malt with young 8 years on the worldmarket is better! A real bargain! And more and more rare!!
Got a gift of this a few years back. Always been an admirer of the Dimple Pinch, The Glen Morangie 18yr, Lismore, but you get the picture. The eight year Glen Garioch is my NEW favorite for the last 7 years! Just too good to serve to folk who drop in and annoy! THEY get the Dewars!
