Girvan 20 Year Old 1990 - The Clan Denny (Douglas Laing)
Girvan Distillery was built by William Grant and Sons (from that there Glenfiddich) to produce grain whisky for their popular Grant's Blend. However, Clan Denny have bottled a single cask of twenty year old Girvan in its own right, so you can enjoy it outside of the blend it calls home.
Grain whisky is becoming more and more popular as people become canny to its amazing value for money. By the nature of grain whisky it requires a lot longer in cask than malt whisky to make it palatable hence why they are usually bottled in excess of twenty years old, however they are also a lot cheaper to make - long story short you get old whisky at a better price!
Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt
Nose
This grain whisky hits the nose in a big way with vanilla, elder flower and big wood spice notes. As the whisky opens up it becomes more Bourbon like with pine resin and wood polish notes emerging.
Palate
Spicy yet syrupy, the palate is like a treacle tart dusted with the contents of a spice rack.
Finish
The finish takes no prisoners and treats the drinker to an encore of vanilla, elderflower and cumin.
Overall
This is a massive grain whisky with an almighty abv of 59.7%, if you like you whiskies forward and strong, this could be just your thing.
