Description

We’ve got a thing for mature grain whisky at Master of Malt. Give it the right cask and enough time, and its apparently easy-going character can reveal all sorts of complexity. This 19-year-old single grain from Girvan is a fine example of why we keep coming back. Matured in a refill cask, it needed no finishing or reracking, we liked it just as it was, so that’s how we bottled it: at a cask strength of 60% ABV, without chill-filtration or added colour. Just 151 bottles from this cask.

Nose

Sweet, fruity, with nostalgic aromas of the classroom (pencils, erasers, even a touch of glue). Popcorn and vanilla wafers, too.

Palate

Immediately makes its ABV known but somehow evaporates into pineapple juice and fresh, hard pears. Spice (unrelated to the ABV) and gentle industrial depth, too.

Finish

Medium long, which surprised us, with a vanilla character that is slightly bitter (olive oil?). Peaches, cream and buttered crumpets. Elegant and just “strange” enough to be fascinating.
