Fettercairn 12 Year Old

One of four new Fettercairn expressions to be launched in August 2018, the Fettercairn 12 Year Old was intended to embody the distillery’s floral and exotic fruit-driven character. It was matured in American oak bourbon casks and bottled at 40% ABV.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose Refreshing nectarine, white flowers and milk chocolate emerge initially. Black toffee and subtle roasted coffee provide darker notes underneath,

Palate Tropical fruit and sticky Jamaican ginger cake add a sweet and spicy depth which a flicker of bitter herbs and vanilla complement.

Finish Orchard fruits and soft spices linger.

Reviews for Fettercairn 12 Year Old
A unicorn on the howe of the mairns!
Light and subtle, hence, there's a lot of variety in the tasting notes. For me, it's all about the mild orangey citrus and spice (cloves), with some vanilla & malt in the middle and a medium finish that leaves you with more gently warming spice. I'm sure the subtlety in the profile brings out the orchard fruit that appears in many other tasting notes, but not so much for me. There's nothing too bold here, so I think it would make a nice aperitif or early evening dram to enjoy a Sunset Song!

Not sure
I’ve been wanting to try this for some time now so finally bought one from MM. I just don’t get this exotic fruit taste at all . I get vanilla, orchard fruit and ginger spice but none of the mango, nectarine etc. It’s not a bad malt but I have others that are the same price or cheaper that offer more. The finish is too short for me too. I’m enjoying it but feel like I wouldn’t rush to repeat the purchase.

Pleasant surprise
Have to say I found this one of nicest new whisky I have tasted for a while. Really enjoyed the pear taste it left. Excellent value

Am I mental??
Interesting to read some of the reviews previously posted, especially regarding peach notes. I was enjoying a dram of this tonight and whilst I could pick up on the peach notes there was an underlying element that didn’t quite make that description wholly satisfactory for my palate. After a lot of nosing I came to the conclusion that the peach element reminded me more of, in an olfactory sense of picking and smelling girolle mushrooms, that slightly damp, slightly mossy peach stone scent but still quite wet woody and not so much fresh fruit as other people have described. Enjoyed it very much and love a whisky that poses a challenge and makes you think. Great way to unwind after a hard shift in the kitchen.

Bread and butter pudding
Everyone's taste buds are different and reading the reviews it definitely shows. I tried a sample before purchasing a bottle and it reminded me of my mums bread and butter pudding. It has a light fruity opening with a wonderful slight spice conclusion. I found this really drinkable during the cold winter months. Will probably buy another this winter.

Smooth and subtle
Received as a gift and amazed at the smoothness as previous experiences with this distillery were always best described as slightly ‘rough’.
Will certainly buy another.

Fruit
Full of sweet fruit and vanilla. Sounds like ice cream? You're not far wrong. If it's a challenge your taste buds are after, this isn't it, just a delicious balanced scotch.

"Too minty and light"

I'm a licensed Q-grader - different liquid sure - but sensory evaluation of valuable drinks is my job...

How you can arrive at a 1 star review of this whisky is almost hilarious were it not for its stupidity.

Its 4* incredible value.

It flicks ripe pear and caramel hints but with great balance. Top dram

Smooth
A little spice but not too much and overall some good fruit flavours. A nice dram for the price

Too minty and light
For me the it reminds me of kendal mint cake. This flavour is way too overpowering. I am so disappointed because there are so much better options out there. Will probably never touch Fettercairn again.
