This right here is a superb ten-year-old single malt Scotch whisky, distilled by an undisclosed distillery on Epidion. Now, if you look at a map of Scotland, you're unlikely to see Epidion on there, unless it's an extraordinarily out of date map. Y'see, Epidion is the name that was recorded for Islay by mathematician and geographer Ptolemy all the way back in the 100s. It feels sort of weird to write the 100s like it's the 1980s, but it's technically correct, and that's when Ptolemy was alive, so we're going with it.
Anyway, yes, Epidion is a very old name for Islay, hence why it has been used as the name for this fabulous Islay single malt whisky! Bottled up at a hearty 54.7% ABV, a portion of the whisky was matured in sherry casks, imparting a touch of sweetness to its richly peaty core. Now you can enjoy smoky single malt and use archaic names for an island like you're a time traveller. Maybe you could wear some sort of exciting hat to further the idea that you are unstuck from the constraints of time?
Creamy and doughy to begin, with buttered sourdough and vanilla shortbread bolstered by sprinklings of sweet spice and rich oak char, before crashing waves of vegetal, smoky peat take hold.
Sweet stone fruits and dense peat smoke collide in spectacular fashion, with creamy vanilla and juicy barley in tow. There are charred herbs and pungent bonfire embers, with sticky toffee tangling beneath.
A splendid balance of sweet peat, earthy smoke, cakey spice, vibrant oak char, and vanilla, with tickles of pepper and smoked peanuts in the distance.
The description states superb and I couldn’t agree more. Flavoursome with a nice after burn - this has become my go to whiskey
The nearest equivalent I can compare with was a £0:50p bottle of supper market whisky bought for me in China. Over riding taste in is dolly mixtures. If I can't give it away I'll pour it down the loo. K.Davis
