    Product details

    Edradour 10 Year Old (43%)

Edradour is one of Scotland's smallest distilleries and at the heart of the range, this 10 year old Eastern Highlander is a rather unique single malt, a decidedly rum-like dram with a thick mouthfeel. The distillery’s methods of production remain virtually unchanged in the last 150 years, and we can see why. If it ain’t broke and all that. This single malt’s decade of ageing was spent in a combination of oloroso sherry and bourbon casks.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

Medium, great complexity. Thoroughly fruity, sherry, sweetness, alluring vanilla.

    Palate

Cloying, seductive murkiness. Rum, barley, toasted almonds.

    Finish

    Spiced fruitcake with crème anglaise.

“Single malt is supposed to stop maturing once uncasked, blended and bottled. I recently poured a dram of Edradour 10 four years after first sampling. Surprised that this time around it retains the attributes of that original dram, but the harsh aspects of the woody finish are gone. Well rounded is the best way to describe it now. Overall I give it an 10 out of 10. Five of maybe 100 scotches that I have tried since 1998 have rated as highly. Secret: uncork once acquired, then re-cork and leave for a couple of years. Then re-open and pour at least 1.5 ounces and add a touch of filtered water. Take outside to “breath” then sip. Hard to describe the velvety taste.”

    omg...........

I'm a drinker not a writer however WOW.....a wonderful sweet fruity nose. Not so flowery as to deny it's scotch heritage. Robust delightful smooth palate. You're right "seductive, almost coy for a single malt".This is a great malt to serve to a non single malt drinking good friend. Being 70yrs. young myself I like to think age is important" WRONG", 10yrs and wonderful. Robert in Canada.

    Soap

Smells delicious - but once you drink the stuff it gives way to an overpowering taste of soap. Is that normal here, or have I got a bad batch?

I suppose to each their own on this one. I imagine good friends and a memorable distillery tour can make this seem worthy of top marks and preserving a particular personal experience, but something doesn't add up when standing on its own. It took a very long time to open up with a neat pour. Eventually I got the sherried and vanilla nose, but the syrupy palate is soapy, confusing, and a little too hot for being just 40%. The finish - while reminiscent of spice and custard, unfortunately trailed into a thick, numbing, cough syrupy aftertaste. If you're into Highland whisky, I'd recommend looking at tasting notes for Dalmore, Old Pulteney, or Clynelish in the same price range.

South Africa - The Great Karroo

I am staying in centre of the Great Karroo. Semi desert with very little water. After a hard days work on my farm in temperatures rising to 45 degrees centigrade, nothing beats this whiskey as a sundowner. Got a bottle from my daughter residing in Ireland.Great stuff!
