From the recently revived Dunville's Very Rare range of Irish whiskey, presented by the Echlinville distillery in Northern Ireland, comes a 10 year old single malt Irish whiskey which has been finished in Pedro Ximénez casks. A very intriguing release, with plenty of orchard fruit, custard and old fashioned sweetie notes. It was recently crowned Best Irish Single Malt Under 12 Years at the 2015 World Whiskies Awards.
Fresh green apples, tropical chews and coconut lead, with dried grass and a touch of crème brûlée.
Stewed red fruits, candied orange and a crackle of black pepper initially, before a little mocha, custard and spice rise.
Juicy and pleasant on the finish with some lingering wood.
Its not very rare the VR actually represents Queen victoria who reigned during the time of the distillation of this bottle VR = victoria regina
I agree that in the £30 - £50 price range this & Redbreast 12 are in the top 3 Irish allong with Teeling Single Malt. The only Irish I've tried as good is Bushmills 16 but thats going into the Ultra Premium Bracket & the above 3 are better bang for your buck.
Has won multiple awards and can see why...fantastic flavours with a bit of a spicy overtone, giving way to a sweeter custard finish. Along with Redbreast 12 probably the best Irish whiskey's available for under £50 (or £100 for that matter!)
Really impressive. Although I live in Ireland I usually drink speyside malts my current favourite being Aberlour A' Bunadh (cask strength). My daughter bought me a bottle of Dunville VX for Christmas and I really liked it. I have tried most of the Irish single malts and I never thought they had any depth or complexity. This is different and is without doubt the best Irish single malt I have tried. Well done Echlinville distillery.
It's amazing how are taste buds differ. The previous reviewer dumped his bottle which seems like madness, I really enjoyed it, bought another and look forward to what The Echlinville distillery have to offer in the future as there stock matures. Sláinte
