Scallywag Bottling Note

Big Peat's gone and got himself a trusty sidekick in the shape of a dapper Fox Terrier wearing a monocle! Scallywag from Douglas Laing is a vatted malt made from Speyside whiskies, including Mortlach, Macallan and Glenrothes. Many of the whiskies used in the small batch release come from Spanish sherry butts, giving Scallywag a fab sweetness that's balanced by some "mischievous" bourbon cask whisky also in the blend.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Sweetness jumps up like an excited puppy. Icing sugar, sultanas and candied ginger. A few hints of grain here and there, but sweetness steals the show.

Palate: The sweetness surprisingly retreats, revealing nutmeg and cereal. Vanilla comes in near the end. Cinnamon too, giving it a prickle of spice.

Finish: A pinch of oak spice joins the vanilla and sherry for the finish.

Overall: Incredibly pleasant, the Scallywag is an absolute treat in every sense.

Scallywag Reviews

Excellent Speyside representation

Bought this for a contribution to a regular whisky tasting with an “independent bottler” theme, and was not disappointed. As other people have said - rich, sweet and spicy with a hint of marmalade. Will be re-buying, and trying the rest of the range on the back of this.

must like Fennel

god dam this is fantastic!!!, if you like Fennel.
This taste amazing until the massive Fennel wave takes over.
Fennel is not my jam, but this is absolutely amazing until the Fennel takes over. If you enjoy black licorice, this is your dram

Me and my partner argue over this!

What a lovely bottle of whisky! A random buy and so glad we bought this, me and my partner argue over this bottle as it’s so nice! Very flavourful, fragrant and very enjoyable over ice, if you like this you will also like the epicurean so maybe worth a try!

Sweet, cinnamon, spice excellence

My favourite banded whisky. It’s sweet, yet a bit spicy, but manages to be smooth at the time. Sublime and one for the senses. Easily drunk neat.

Cram packed with flavor. Cardamon and cinnamon, Werther's. Peppery licorice, pinch of salt. Sweet.

Young on the nose, like the other NAS ones in the series, but has a LOT more going for it on the palate.
- Impressed with intensity of taste. Thumbs up.

Happy with purchase of 5cl mini.
Can't wait for the 18yo.

The mix of malts is no better than the single.

Fruit rot. Too sweet, too young...

Great speyside whisky

Everything you look for in a speyside whisky. Tired at show recently and came back for more. Absolutely delicious straight up or with a bit of dark chocolate which is what I was recommended to try.

Intriguing blend

Great vatted malt, excellent value like all Douglas Laing products. To me a must try , again and again......

Some big plusses.

I find this to be a pretty solid blend. The taste shows a bit of immaturity, and it actually has some notes that make it seem like there's a fair bit of grain whisky. However, it is in fact a blended malt.

It's a very rounded and drinkable Speyside. I would prefer a bit more age on it, but it's certainly a quality whisky at its price point. Benefits from a few minutes resting in the glass. Great artwork and a wonderful gift for the casual or novice whisky drinker. Hats off to the Douglas Laing folks for having a quality blended malt, at 46%, with an affordable price! Rating for the actual taste of the whisky, but 4.5 stars all around. :)

I had tried this in the past at a "Whisky Lounge" Indie Night and liked it although I think it was overshadowed by some of the other Whiskies on offer that night. I recently got a bottle as a gift and it much nicer than I remembered, very smooth and extremely nice, you can tell it has a bit of Macallan in there - Really nice.

The finish is more like a shewing the pencil, too much wood influence.I'm glad that I've only tried a small sample.
