Dalwhinnie 1996 (bottled 2012) Oloroso Cask Finish - Distillers Edition

Another entry into the Dalwhinnie Distillers Edition series, always a lovely treat when they get released. This one is a 1996 vintage which was finished in an Oloroso cask and bottled in 2012.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

Sweet citrus notes, with an unmistakable heather fluttering.

    Palate

Rich and sherried, delicious grapes and sprinkles of spice.

    Finish

The spice grown hotter on the finish, wonderfully energetic.

    Overall

    A great vintage for Dalwhinnie.

    Amazing light after taste

Master of Malt Customer Jun 23, 2016

    Excellent, if a bit pricey

Received this as a gift and, due to the price of these Dalwhinnie DE's, I would have probably passed it by. Which would have been too bad because it's certainly very well crafted, with an excellent light nose with lots of honey, vanilla with some citrus notes on the back-end of the nose. This continues through into the pallet with just a hint of light sherry fruit (a sherry-bomb this is not) and a hint of banana. The finish is clean, a tad floral with just a hint of peat. Don't go in expecting an Islay peat-monster or a Speyside sherry-bomb and you'll find it's a legitimately good example of a smooth highland malt.

    Satisfying

Yep, I opened it. I really like the peated stuff, my wife bought this for me after the store owner recommended it. What a magnificently balanced whisky. Really Awesome and very satisfying!
