Craigellachie 17 Year Old Bottling Note

It used to be a rather rare sight to see an official bottling of Craigellachie single malt. Well after years of waiting, in 2014, four turned up all at once! The 17 year old expression really shows off the meatiness of this Speysider's spirit - top stuff.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Apple crumble, melon and raisins. Honey'd barley, a little hint of smoke and vanilla ice-cream.

Palate: It opens very sweet with pineapple and custard creams, though the meatiness soon shines through. More smoke on the palate than the nose, with a touch of clove and oak.

Finish: Waxy and smoky on the finish.

Character and warmth but a little sharp for me

This whisky has character and warmth, but for me it had just a little too much sharpness in taste; my partner said she definitely liked this malt.

Incredible whisky. Waxy finish coats the mouth while you get the glorious warm feeling through your chest. Would recommend to anyone and everyone.

Stunning balance, glorious whisky

This is a superb dram, and the balance is stunning. I am not a fan of the Craigellachie character overall, as it sometimes leans too much into sulfur, but here it matters not. The mixture of bourbon and sherry casks, plus ageing, is masterful. Fruits and ginger and warming spices, that is the story throughout, from nose to finish. This whisky can stand up too many strong contenders. Praiseworthy, bare hints of ancient wood, and heaps of spirit and cask flavor, all in the right balance. I am only one person but this blows away the 13 year expression; they are not even comparable.

Lovely, just lovely

My usual choice is smokey whisky, this does not even register in the smoke, but in nose, palate and finish it is one of the best ones i have tasted in years.

The nose made me think of white wine, apple cider the flavor is a rich mixture of sweet flavors. It is not a cheap bottle, but i will have to track one down.

This a 5 star whisky all day long........

This a 5 star whisky all day long........Exceptional in every way. Better than the 23 year old !!! which costs £200+ more..... This is, as good as it gets for the style. Stocking up in case , god forbid , the quality drops. My all time favs are Craigellachie 17 , Balblair 1990 2017 bottling and the mind blowing Glengoyne 25 and not forgetting 2 bottles of 60 year MOM secret bottling single malt (No words can describe just how good this unbelievable whisky is).

Good but not outstanding

Tasting party with the boys. Aroma...very mild, light on aroma, light colour, blue sky. Taste...spice on the tongue but light on the finish, sweet, maybe some chocolate under tones. The taste....wheat, sea salt. One of the tasters indicated there is not much differentiation from the 13 yr old. Is it the best we've it is smooth. This is a status quo type whiskey.

One of my favs!

Bought a bottle a while ago and went through it in no time. When I'm in the mood for something lighter this one is hard to beat.Just got another... light honey and vanilla with a bit of smoke....fantastic!

Not worth the extra - buy the 13 instead

Don't get me wrong, it's really really satisfying whisky but I'm sitting here with two tasting glasses, one for the 13 the other for the 17. I've been drinking the 13 for a while and adore the feel, the balance, the syrupy finish and long, lingering chocolate caramel. There's nothing wrong with the 17, it is also wonderfully meaty, full bodied, with luscious oak, vanilla, chocky, spice and dried fruit. It's just that every time I go back to the 13, I think "damn that's good". The 17 is almost twice the price. I'll keep it in the cabinet and sup it from time to time but I'll go on buying the 13. In fact I may lay in some stock in case it all goes.
