I wasn't expecting much out of an American single-malt that sold for under $30 USD. But I was intrigued - after all, it's all malt, pot-stilled, bottled at 48% ABV and non-chill filtered. The barley is dried using fruitwood (apple and cherrywood) smoke. You can definitely pick up the cherry on the nose, but it's an odd scent, a bit foul, like burning tires. It has decent mouth feel, smoother than you'd expect for being aged a little more than a year. The finish is woody and lingers. A little water will help put out the fire, and will ease the assault on your senses. I liked the dram more (or disliked it less) as the glass emptied, but longed to cleanse my palate with something else. It'll go to the back of the cabinet for now and perhaps make its way out when daring guests are eager to try something very different.
I've been accustomed to the 'normal' single malts---regardless if it's from Scotland, India, or Tasmania. This one is quite different. You can definitely tell it's young, and surprisingly smooth for something that young. Reminds me more of a 10 year old than a 15 month old. Try before buying...not for everyone. Not sure I'd buy again, but it was worth the experience.
I am fairly new to the world of whisky but I have tasted most of the "mainstream" whiskies. The Wasmund's is unlike anything I've tasted thus far. For me it has the most distinctive taste of any whisky I've tried so far. A nose, taste and finish you won't mistake for anything else. My first dram was just OK but I have grown to like it more and more. It's worth the price just to have this incredibly unique American single malt. Very pleased to have found it. I'll keep it in the collection long term, for sure - it's that unique.
