Hold the phone, the Paps of Jura? Prince Vuntan?! I know that view! It's the view from the still room at Caol Ila! I recognise this label too, except this one says "Batch 2" on it... [Jake has started pinching himself to make sure this isn't some wonderful dream.]
Yes, it's a second batch of Caol Ila from That Boutique-y Whisky Company! The first award-wining batch was released to coincide with Fèis Ìle 2013 and was an absolutely fantastic drop, named "Best Buy" in Whisky Mag Issue 120. If you were at the festival you may well have tasted it for yourself, or indeed if you had the good sense to buy a bottle. Sadly Batch 1 has long since sold out... Long live Batch 2!
This is a release of 278 bottles.
‘That Boutique-y Whisky Company’ bottles single malts, single grains, bourbons, blended malts and blends from a variety of renowned distilleries. These whiskies are adorned with cultish graphic novel-style labels.
Nose: Meaty and malty at first, washback notes with sooty smoke. With time in the glass and just a few drops of water (don't drown it) it transforms and opens with honeyed barley, almost entering Gold Bears territory although it never quite decides to go there. Instead, the barley is joined by cumin, sweet florals and gentle smoke.
Palate: Again quite meaty at first, developing slowly with juicy oak, pecan and linseed with this edge of persimmon and starfruit. It makes you work a little this one, but it's definitely worth it.
Finish: Pow! Where did all that ash come from? Now all my citrus is buried in ash, it's in there somewhere though.
Overall: Full-bodied Caol Ila, great peated malt from Islay!

Very rich, but also with a sort of lemony zestiness that you can't find in other Islay whiskies. Smashing times.
