Moch is Gaelic for dawn, and this release from Caol Ila is an altogether lighter prospect than the distillery's excellent 12 year old standard expression.
Lemon sherbet and apple crumble topping with custard. Dry grass and not a hint of smoke.
Sweet lemon meringue pie and soft, very soft mouthfeel. The peat hits a third of the way in but it's restrained; soothing wood smoke rather than burning tyres, and it retains a sweetness throughout.
Soft drying smoke.
A tasty, easy drinking Islay that's pulled back on peat but not on flavour.
Really light peaty tasting scotch. The overall tasting note describes it perfectly. Bought 2 bottles on offer which were great value.
My only previous experience of Caol Ila was an independent bottle from Mr Cadenhead which was the peatiest thing ever. This is quite different, and extremely smooth. It has an overwhelming character of orange sherbert which is utterly delicious. Would be wonderful with Christmas pudding. Really a stellar whisky.
I wish there was something between the Caol Ila 12 and the Moch. The 12 is a bit too oily. The 12 also varies wildy from bottle to bottle. The first bottle bought was lovely and smokey and oily. The second bottle was almost as bland as Vodka.
The balance achieved in this dram is unlike anything I’ve had before. We might turn our nose up at non age statement whiskies, but this shows what talented distillers/blenders can achieve. Sweet on the nose, and the initial taste. Syrupy mouthfeel suggests age that probably isn’t here. Smoke develops in after taste. Leaves you sitting by a bonfire, just breathing it in.
Lovely malt with light smokey flavour, very very nice.
