“OK, I'm going to sound weird here, but of all communities, I know you'll know what I mean. This is my absolute must-have bottle. I can close my eyes and imagine being in an old whisky shop, wooden floor, fireplace crackling away. I'm on an old leather chair, swirling my glass as the salty sea loch meets the harbour walls outside. Burning bonfire wood, oily seaweed, salt, cherries, dark chocolate, quality leather, more salty seaweed and cherry, finishes with the sea air. Of all whiskies I've had, the Buna 12 is one of those few that you don't need to search into too hard for the flavours; it tells you exactly what it is. Can only give 5*”

Description

The fantastic flagship from Bunnahabhain (pronounced boo-na-ha-ven), launched as the distillery's original single malt in 1979, this Bunnahabhain 12 Year Old. It is aged in a mixture of bourbon and sherry casks and, since a relaunch in 2010, has been bottled at a big 46.3% ABV without chill-filtration or additional colouring. Very impressive. Bunnahabhain 12 Year Old is unpeated, unlike most Islay whisky, but has a beautiful coastal quality complemented by its fruity, light, sweet and nutty character. It’s one of those whiskies that newcomers and enthusiasts alike appreciate.

Nose

Fresh, sweet, and a little floral. There’s seaweed, rich malt, dried fruit, camphor, caramel, chocolate orange, and apple poached in cinnamon.

Palate

Soft and supple with a nutty, sherried quality leading among vanilla, marmalade, sultanas, and a bright coastal element.

Finish

Mochaccino, dried herbs, Christmas cake spice, and a balanced salty tang.

Superb Neat

I am particularly with the things I drink neat and this it at the top of my list if enjoyed in the following manner. I open the bottle, pour out a bit which is conserved in a sealed bottle. The remaining amounts in each bottle are allow to mellow by melding with the air in each bottle. After a week or two each has become something wonderful. I then drink it neat at room temperature with only a drop of filtered water added. It becomes a wonderful accompaniment to certain cheeses, chocolate, or on its own with an espresso.

Value for money

Great whisky, especially if you have a limited budget. Highly recommend this 12 year old whisky . You will not be disappointed

It's up there

Being relatively new to scotch, i don't have much to compare this to other than the contents of the advent calendar I treated myself to last year. I have learned I don't like smokey varieties and this is well clear of that. Very nice over a single ice cube.

Not to bad

It's a decent whisky, but way to expensive where we are, ($120+) so it'll be a once only since there is so much better out there in it's price range. It was my brother in-laws parrots fav whisky though, so we had to take it off him.
