Bunnahabhain 12yo 2022

Back for a second year, Bunnahabhain's annual 12 Year Old Cask Strength is here, bottled at a robust 56.6% ABV. The expression takes inspiration from the tasting experience offered to visitors of the distillery's Warehouse 9, where they're able to taste whiskies drawn straight from the cask. Unpeated and well sherried, the majority of the whisky was matured in oloroso casks, with balance brought by a selection of bourbon cask matured spirit. Natural colour and without chill filtration, this is an ace opportunity to sample the single malt in its rawer form.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose Chocolate buttons, cranberries, and cherries, with dates and sultanas joining in time, bolstered by woody spice.

Palate Hazlenuts, drizzled with milk chocolate. A touch of salinity is balanced by crisp green apple, poached pear, and clove.

Finish Salted almonds, dustings of cacao, steeped berries, and cakey spice.

Reviews for Bunnahabhain 12 Year Old Cask Strength - 2022 Edition
Go right ahead and buy it
Beautiful sweet and fruity nose, continued on to the palate. This is the kind of bottle that you'll want to be getting for Christmas every year. One of the most well rounded sherry cask bottles I've had, and I've had plenty.

good , but not the greatest
Solid whisky; but similar to what I experienced with some other Bunnahabhain bottles, the finish gives a nasty, dusty, cardboard aftertaste on the pallet.

The regular 12 but better
It's my Go to pour at the moment.

Exceptional sherried whisky
I bought last year"s release and liked it but wasn't thrilled. This year is considerably more impressive. Some really great casks have been used here; I get similar notes to an older vintage glendronach 18 I have open. Scotch mist like nothing I've ever seen on addition of water. Diluted to 46% and tasted side by side with the standard 12 Year Old, the difference is clear. Debatable whether it's worth double but if you're a big fan of Bunnahabhain I think this is worth buying a bottle of to experience; it feels like quite a special release.

A big disappointment
You ever buy a bottle of whisky, try it and wish you hadn't? Well, this is it for me. Normally, I'm a bit fan of Bunna - I have the 12, Stiuireadair and Toiteach a Dha in my cupboard as evidence - and I was really looking forward to this cask strength BUT what a disappointment. It's 56.6% so a bit too strong for me to drink neat but adding water ( in varying amounts) just seems to make it fall apart. This is not a cheap dram at nearly £80 so I think in future I'll stick to the good old 12yo or the Stiuireadair, which I can buy locally for £26. As for cask strengths, I'll go back to my Glenallachie, Glendronach or Laphroaig.

Scotch Mist Monster
Never seen anything quite like this. Addition of a teaspoon of water leads to complete clouding over within about 30 seconds. Mouth feel is that of a thick cough syrup. Taste and smell are spectacular. Definitely worthy of the hype.

Stunning
The is stunning. The most scotch mist I have seen in a modern whisky - it has all that makes the 12 year old a classic but amped up to 11… it’s a steal at the price
