Port Charlotte 10yo Bottling Note

Introduced as the flagship Port Charlotte expression produced by Bruichladdich in 2018, this 10 year old single malt from the Isle of Islay is a lip-smackingly smoky number indeed. It's peated to 40ppm, and drawn from a combination of first-fill American whiskey casks, second-fill American whiskey casks and second-fill French wine casks.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Salted caramel brownie, flamed orange peel, a hearty whack of seaweed.

Palate: Oak-y smoke and salty sea air, paired with sweeter notes of Custard Cream biscuits and white grape.

Finish: Ginger snaps, rye toast, drying peat smokiness.

Port Charlotte 10 Year Old Reviews

Good 10yo Islay Peated Expression

Experience wise, it is a fairly good standard Islay malt. For an entry-level (10yo) it is rather good. Nevertheless, it is not substantially better than its Islay sibblings, for instance, Ardbeg 10. Surely, it is worth a full bottle purchase. However, you should be aware that there are other classic peaters that are just as good and more affordable.

Decent but overpriced

Not as good as ardbeg 10 yet costs much more. It’s almost as expensive as the Uigeadail which is miles better. I’m glad they released a pc with an age statement as a standard offering but they also raised the price too much on it.

FINAL notes.

+ Yellow fruit, also like a Caol Ila, honey melon, tangerines, orange peels, slight hint of blood orange, cloud berries. Hint of tobacco. whipped cream. FUDGE. nice and salty. sour bite. hint of black pepper on the finish. Well rounded. 'Smooth', if you will.

I said below that this was most reminiscent of an Ardbeg 10, but that was the neck pour (and with water added). The intensity of the peat and the fullness of the fruit both come out much more with air in the bottle.
I would ultimately compare this to a half and half, fruity, salty, nutty CAOL ILA / BOWMORE blend.

The End.

RIGHT between Ardbeg and Caol Ila, tendning toward Ardbeg. Delicious.

NOT as dry on the palate as an Ardbeg, but drier on the nose. Big vanilla. Floral, but less vegetal than AbG. Custard. I do * not * get any real presence of iodine or medicinality here. Custardy cream-like mouthfeel. Pleasantly sweet. Well balanced. Luxurious and altogether delicious. Applause for true Craft!

Very, very close to the Ardbeg Ten. Perhaps a lighter-weight Ardbeg.

Smoky, peaty. Insidious malt. Don't know where the orange comments come from. Maybe they've had orange stuff with or before. My second favourite after Jura

A bit of a classic.

I don't usually drink whisky like this, but then it's not usually made as well as this. This has an authentically brash, young Islay tang, with lemon in the top note and a deeply satisfying, "pretzel" finish. But it is not harsh. Well worth buying, especially at this price.

Nice on parts

I get a distinct lime / citrus flavour on the tongue. And not quite the smoke.

Smooth, smokey..... Braw! 🥃

After only recently acquiring a taste for malt whisky, I found I enjoyed Laphroaig, and Ardbeg however this port charlotte 10year old is much smoother, nice and smokey more so than the Ardbeg.
