From Dramfool comes the FINAL release of the Jim McEwan Signature Collection and the brand saved the best till last: Jim’s favourite three casks. It's been quite a ride. How often does a whisky legend personally nose and select casks for a collection that honours his contribution to the spirit?
Octomore 9.3 was distilled on 15 November 2012 and was peated to a big 156ppm. The whisky was then aged for 11 years in a first-fill bourbon barrel (cask #4355) before it was bottled in January 2024. As with everything in the collection, it was presented un-chill filtered, with no added colour and at a cask strength (in this case, 63.3% ABV). This cask yielded only 226 bottles.
The tasting note is from Jim McEwan MBE, who provides an insight into texture rather than a finish.
Sweet & smoky it truly hits the olfactory system with the Islay DNA, add the spicy notes from the fresh Bourbon cask and you’re walking on Islay without a care in the world. 11 years by the Atlantic has left a DNA that is like no other.
Please do not add too much water, you will be walking on sunshine. Enjoy the smoke & the oak, add the sweetness of the barley sugar which creates a top note that underpins the marine influence, as I say its Islay at its very best with a sweet spicy overture from the bourbon-soaked oak staves.
Texture: 100% Islay, fresh & vibrant. No mistaking where this spirit came from. Its Islay at its very best, strong & packed with character that can only come from a single cask.
