Bowmore The Devil's Casks III - Double The Devil

When the folk of Bowmore formed an angry mob to chase the devil out of the church (which is of course round, offering him nowhere to hide), down the road and through the distillery, it was assumed that he must have made his escape in a cask heading to the mainland aboard the Maid of Islay. Some first fill sherry casks at Bowmore make you wonder though, how can whisky be so devilishly delicious? This third and final Devil's Casks release uses both oloroso and Pedro Ximénez casks for the first time.

This bottle was part of a private collection - if you'd like more detailed photos just get in touch!

Much better than Macallan Rare Casks

Those people complaining about the price hike for this release clearly have no idea of the age of the whisky that has gone into this bottling, or the rarity, quality, cost of the casks. They have only two pieces of information; the price of this bottling AND the price of the previous two. Yes this is expensive BUT the quality is undeniable and absolute. I notice that many of the half star reviewers haven't poured their scorn on the MacAllan Rare Cask (price virtually identical). Another NAS whisky! I have had both and The Devil's Cask 3rd release is infinitely better. It occurs to me that Bowmore have gone all out to make a truly memorable whisky for this release AND THAT COSTS MONEY! After all when they put 'Limited Edition' on a bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue Label they charge the same as this, and that's also NAS! Bowmore have maybe been arrogant in charging a bit too much, and not bothered to cover why this whisky is much more expensive (and sales have no doubt suffered as a result); but pretty much the entire whisky industry are guilty of this; (independents such as Glendronach and BenRiach aside).

    Taste it before reviewing it

Yes the price is CRAZY but review the quality of the whisky rather than giving a whisky you've never tried half a star! This is really, really good. Unfortunately it isn't worth the price hike over similar quality & style whisky's such as Gelendronach 2003 TWS exclussive or the OMC Brucichladdie (Port Charlotte) 11 bottle for Loch Fyne. This is glorious example of PX casking and the flavour profile of Bowmore comes through, just about to make it something different too the two previously mentioned whisky's. The MoM tasting notes on this page are accurate and regardless of the price of previous editions I would happily buy another bottle if it were £100. However at £190 the head rules the heart! Finally I re-iterate; if you're going to give a whisky a review then try tasting it first!

    A lot cheaper in Canada

Looks like there is something strange going on in the US and in Europe around this scotch. The devil's cask is 110 CAD here... which is something like 50 pounds.
