Bowmore 12 Bottling Note

The heart of the Bowmore range, the 12 year old exhibits some beautiful coastal notes with a gentle peat, it is the balance that the floral element presents that makes this a great entry bottling for Bowmore.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Coastal smoke and ash soon make way for bergamot, orange zest, lemon slices and some hay before becoming rather floral, heather smoke now competing with the ash.

Palate: Lovely and rounded, honeyed even, initially. Vanilla, perfumed smoke and coastal elements develop. Dark Peat. Blossom, oily sweetness.

Finish: Smoky and long. Sea spray, dry grass, a touch of ash and citrus.

Overall: Classic stuff and the heart of the Bowmore range. Smoky, fruity, coastal, delicious.

Bowmore 12 Year Old Reviews

Where is the smoke?

I have tried a lot of Bowmore many years ago ( Enigma, Legend, 15 years old Mariner, cask strength etc.) They were
ALL fantastic, VERY peaty and maritim. First I have bought a bottle of Bowmore 12 years old in 2011 . It was total different to the actual bottle of Bowmore 12. It had much more smoke. Now the smoke notes are almost gone.
This whisky is now much sweeter , more a Speysider. Don`t get me wrong, this is not a bad whisky at all, but if I want a peated whisky, then I would buy Caol Ila 12, Ardbeg 10 or Laphroaig 10 etc. After Talisker 10 ( the same story ) it is another huge disappointment for me

Nope!

Nope! I perservered with this for as long as i could and tipped about a third of bottle down the sink. I am sure bowmore can make good whisky, but this just isn't.

Very good nice smoked flavour just great

Very good I drunk the beat whisky is the world and this one is far better than some that I spend £500 for a bottle , it is a smoked whisky if you don’t understand it is don’t like you can try and may like may not . But I loved . My double dose with a small splash of water . Is what I need in the end of the day and for that price come on is a bargain.

Smooth, lots of different notes and a touch of smoke. Relaxing.

Two firsts. I went in Wigan Central. A pub under the railway arches in Wigan. Excellent beers, friendly atmosphere, typical of Wigan. I ordered Bowmore 12. Pleasantly surprised, alot of different interesting notes. I like a good fruity taste and a touch of smoke about whiskey and this had both. There is nothing harsh about this whiskey, smooth and relaxing. It's not Lagavulin 16 but I found it enjoyable as my first whiskey of the day.

If you smoke cigars, pipe it may work for you

Very poor whiskey, totally overwhelmed by smoke, killing any other supposed flavours dead.
Try washing camp fire cinders, seiving & drinking and you're about there.
No1 is as described, far nicer and better value

Great whisky

A very tasty whisky, don't take notice of the whisky snobs who should stick to what they like rather than try to say this is a drain unblocker etc

Opinions are like arse holes...

... Everyone's got one and they all stink! Some of the wisest words I've ever been taught, so here's mine (opinion): Bowmore legend was the first whisky in which I started to get a real understanding of the whole whisky world, around 10 years ago. I've tried a few different ones since then and when I came back to this one, I remembered that first night of discovering actual flavours in an alcoholic drink (seeing as how I mostly stuck to beer in those days). This whisky didn't disappoint, sea spray or salt, hay loft, smoke, iodine and peat all you'd expect from an islay but much more subtle and less overwhelming than other heavier whiskies, with other tastes of citrus and vanilla.
If you prefer the heavier stuff, you may not like this one, same as if you prefer the frutier or sweeter ones, but don't call it a drain unblocker or dismal, because it simply is not as you should appreciate something for what it is, rather than what you want it to be. I mean honestly, if you know that you don't like islay, why buy tjis so you can complain online??!

Iechyd da!

A barebones beginner's Islay malt

This is a perfectly sippable Islay malt that is also the definition of a mediocre Islay malt. There is so little going on here on the nose and palate that I find it hard to mention anything besides peat, salt, vanilla and a bit of oak. The finish is a flash that leaves only lingering salt instead of the iodine-rich brine that quality Islay malts are known for. Take a McClelland's Islay and age it for 12 years, you will get a Bowmore 12. This is the Glenfiddich of Islay. Recommended only for beginners. I would have a MacLeod's Islay over this malt any day.
