Black Bottle Bottling Note

Relaunched in 2013, Black Bottle Blended Scotch whisky now features a balanced mix of fruitiness and spice alongside the peaty Islay notes that the brand has been known for. This change in direction is a return to Black Bottle's past, as it is said to have been inspired by what the whisky was like when it was made all the way back in 1879. This has also inspired the new old-style black glass bottle, which gave the whisky its name.

Black Bottle Reviews

Affordable and fine character.

Bought in Sainsbury's at only £18.00 for a 70CL bottle, I have been wanting to try this for a little while now. In all honesty I am very impressed. A little deeper in amber colour, on opening, my first whiff was reminiscent of an Irish whiskey; very much like a Bushmills (white label) keen toasted coconut aroma, then followed by a warm peaty, sea-shore breeze tickle with a timid bouquet of heather and moss. My first taste did not disappoint. Warm, cosy and sweet, definitely a sipper, stacks of honey and malt, a little cheeky caramel and butter and a very welcome smoky after-bite. I shall definitely be buying this again. Ideal with a small splash of Highland Spring at room temperature for me.

Honest value good blend.

This is great value and one of my favourite blends. It's not up there with fine single malts but neither is the price. Good enough to sip with a splash of water or an ice cube, cheap enough to souse fruit cake. Ideal for whisky cocktails too.

Great for the price

It’s been so long since I had the previous version that I can’t really comment on the change. There’s a faint smell of smoke but nothing of it in the taste. But it’s good solid warming stuff. A bit rough round the edges but you can’t expect single malt quality at less than £20. May be more one for a hot toddy than for sipping but still perfectly drinkable on its own.

Great for the money

Good stuff, not amazing. It’s a long time since I had the old version so can’t really comment on the difference. Not one for those who like smoke/peat. I think you’d struggle to find better at the price. If you can please say!

Smooth, tasty, very drinkable. Super value

I usually buy single malts but I’ve recently been exploring blends, but at the point premium end. I got this for fifteen pounds so thought I’d be taking a chance and accordingly I set my expectations low. What a surprise! It’s lovely. No burn or ethanol smell/taste often found with blends. The nose is log fire and pine trees, treacle toffee and smoked meat, reminiscent of an alpine ski chalet. Taste is first saccharine treacle toffee (a bit like bowmore select), and then tails off into a spiced Xmas gluhwein. Very smooth and very drinkable. I served in whisky glass with a large ice cube.

Unusual and interesting

Great stuff! There simply isn't a blend at this price with this level of complexity.

Not much afters

I have put off buying a bottle of this for months! On nose at first I was excited! Sweet toffee sugary strong. Then the palate was smooth bodied with some nuttiness to it, then the finish well it doesn’t stick around!

If you’re new to whiskey this is one to start with, but anyone else, the black bottle is just lunchtime whisky, hard to believe it has islay in it!

Overall it’s not bad, it’s fresh, light and sweet, with a minimum finish to it

about BB or have not tasted BB and those that have previously tasted it still have no idea that the liquid in the bottle has changed. Although those that previously tasted BB said that it was to peaty as it had 7 of the Single Islay Malts in one bottle But now it has changed and therefore now requires getting more liquid on lips with Education. BB fights way above its weight.
Slightly peaty, smokey, florals, cinnamon, spicy, nutmeg, baked apples and honey. A must buy.
