Benrinnes 11 Year Old 2010 (Master of Malt)

Well, would you look at what we have here? It's a single malt from Benrinnes, and it joins the independent range of bottlings from us – Master of Malt! After checking over our stash of splendid spirits, this one was looking good and ready for bottling, having spent a total of 11 years maturing, including a finishing period in ex-oloroso hogsheads. The casks were cracked open in 2022, unleashing a total of 195 bottles at a hearty 57.2% ABV. A drop of water can certainly help to open up the flavours here.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

Floral suggestions of heather, blossom, and honeysuckle lead to creamier stone fruit and Peach Melba. A whiff of vanilla shortbread, toasted marshmallow, and some more savoury salinity.

    Palate

Robust, mapley malt packs a punch, alongside dense oak and dark muscovado sugar. Dates, raisins, and prunes begin to make an appearance alongside white pepper prickle at the edges.

    Finish

Custard and toasty crème brûlée keep things creamy, while warming nutmeg and clove edge in towards the end.

    A super sherry cask dram.

Benrinnes is quite a light spirit, so even though it’s been in a refill Oloroso sherry cask this bottle has loads of those sherry cask flavours and spices. In addition there’s no sulphur notes on the nose or palate, it’s a super dram imho.

    very enjoyable

Tried this for the first time last evening and very enjoyable it was, too. At nearly 58% it packs a punch and the sherry influence is obvious. The tasting notes above are pretty spot on but I would add that with my second (or was it my third?) tasting, after the bottle had been open for a while and the whisky had been in the glass, there was a perfume on the palate (pleasant!!) and a hint of liquorice. Certainly a dram I'm going to enjoy and at £50 for cask non-chillfiltered cask strength, a good buy. I've already bought the MoM Dailuaine to try on the strength of this..
