BenRiach 21 Year Old - Pre 2020

Benriach have long been a distillery to keep your eye out for if you're interested in whiskies with inventive maturation periods, and here's a perfect example! This 21 year old has been drawn from a mixture of four casks - bourbon barrels, virgin oak casks, Pedro Ximenéz Sherry casks and red wine casks.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose

Spiced fruit punch, with a touch of warming oak in the background. A few hints of zesty tropical fruit, too.

Palate

The Sherry cask-matured whisky really starts to take control on the palate, with milk chocolate and rain notes developing at its core. Lemon zest and shortbread.

Finish

A lengthy finish, boasting caramel and rye bread.

Requires patience

It's taken the best part of 3 months, and it currently sits at just under half a bottle remaining, but this whisky has finally shown it's quality. Until now the nose had been good, but the palate had been quite one dimensional with some sweetness but mainly oak spice - the finish reminiscent of that. I don't know what has happened but now, as if by magic, their is lemon zest, and caramel, and toffee, some sherried fruits, as well as a hint of the oak spice. The difference is extraordinary - as it stands now it's excellent stuff, as it was before quite middling. On current taste well worth buying.

Decent, but never rising beyond that

The first pour I had was very underwhelming however, after leaving it a couple of weeks the bottle has opened up and it's improved significantly on that first taste. However, though this is still a nice whisky, it isn't anything special, and I can certainly think of better whiskies, in more friendly price brackets, I'd go for. The nose is really nice, probably the best part of the whisky, it's very complex and full. The palate is nice, sweet, some spices, but it just never brings anything particularly great to the table. The finish is OK, and lengthy, but a little boring. The mouthfeel isn't that great, feels slightly thin to me. It's a nice whisky, but it never rises beyond nice, and I want the whisky I drink to rise beyond that if i'm gonna pay the price this costs. Try a sample first if you can, it may suit other palates, it just didn't do much for me.
