BenRiach Curiositas 10 Bottling Note

Curiositas is a 10 year old, peated release from the BenRiach distillery in what they call the 'classic Speyside style'. A distinct malt with great depth and a bittersweet balance.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Sweet grassy malt, succulent fudge and hints of smoke and heather lead. There's a touch of malmsey underneath with fragrant honey and mellow oak.

Palate: Caramelised sugar and strong cereal flavours form the core. Marshmallows, ripe stone fruit and a warm nuttiness develop while peppery spice tingles in the backdrop with green wood smoke.

Finish: Bittersweet with slight suggestions of dry oak, beeswax and fennel.

BenRiach Curiositas 10 Year Old Reviews

Great single malt for the price

This is one of the best single malts I have tasted for some time

For those who like a very light whisky

For me, this was not a very good peated whisky. I like the rich and oily Islay distilleries. Highland Park does a nice sweet whisky with peat with their 12. Benromach 10 is a decent Speyside peated. But this one is far too light in flavour for me. Sure there is smoke, but the underlying whisky is a very light dram. If you enjoy Balvenie 14 Peat Week, this might be a good dram for you at far less cost. But if you love Laphroaig 10, I'd suggest this might not be your cup of tea.

Great peat expression, but alas short to medium finish

Licorice, heather, oak and subtle hints of vanille and honey topped of with a royal dose of peat smoke that when compared to Islays is probably most reminiscent of Ardbeg smoke.

Trumps many Islay whiskies in my opinion. The only pretty big downside is that I would have liked the finish to last a bit longer. Do decide for yourself though because any self-respecting peat lover has to have tried this unique Benriach expression at least once.

Removal of "Non-Chill Filtered Natural Color" statement

Got to say this is my favorite whisky so far. Bought a new bottle and found that the statement of "Non-Chill Filtered Natural Color" has disappeared on the box. Mail to the distillery and confirm that it was no mistake and the act is to "streamline the packaging". Although the ABV is still 46%, there are chances now the Curiositas will be chill filtered and added color. Beware if you have a bad dram with new bottles.

Doesn't work for me

I like peaty Islay malts. I like the sweet and spicy regular BenRiach 10. But adding peat to the BenRiach - I don't like it at all. It doesn't seem integrated - just added on. Unfortunately, I think it has confused my local booze merchant, who will get this but not the regular BenRiach 10.

Some Islay would envy

I'm an Ardbeg and all Islay scotch fan. This right here is one of the best dram I've ever tasted. And for the price you can't go wrong.

What a great distillery

This is possibly my favorite distillery in Speyside I love that they make both peated and unpeated expressions at so many ages and both are pretty equally incredible. My first whisky I bought from Benriach was the 17 year septendecim which was extraordinary and in my top 5 favorites. This is not as smooth and doesn't have the same complexity but this is an awesome 10 year old. I love the peat with the fruity character of a Speyside it's just so unique, quite herbal and medicinal tasting as well with a long smoky finish. Really excellent stuff any Islay fan will love this or any peated expression from Benriach ,really changes your perception of what Speyside whisky can be. The Sugarbear

Best Purchase I've made in a long time!

Picked this up for a great price at work recently, shared a dram with colleagues and guests alike; Beautiful! The peat was spot on, smoky, herby, a real treat. Drink neat, unlike a lot of peaty whiskies this needs no ice or water. Pour and enjoy!

highly enjoyable from someone who en joys a Laphraoig

Excellent

If you enjoy peated whiskies, this is something you should definitely try. The stuff is bottled at 46% (at least my bottle, the page here says it's 40% so maybe there are two versions), and an excellent price-to-quality ratio.

I tend to buy Islay whiskies as my personal preference, but the bottle of BenRiach changed everything, I think it's my current favorite.

The smell is peat mixed with orange peels, brings a nice burning sensation to the nose. It's warm, it's bitter-sweet and absolutely refreshing and energizing.

The taste is what you would actually expect after that nose. Nothing surprises here, it's similar burning sensation to the nose one, sweet but sugar is not dominant, it's also bitter and smoky. Quite long finish, pleasant throughout the experience.

Highly recommendned purchase

Best of 34

I have 34 bottles of whiskey in my drinks cabinet ( I know! you might think "what's the point in having so many?" but I do try & drink them all) and this one is my favorite

9th September 2015

Good but...

I'm a new fan of peated scotch (since a year or so).
One of my favorite is Lagavulin 12 or Bowmore 12. This one is a bit too medicinal for me. However, with a few drops of water, it dissipate that taste and I really enjoy it. Number 3 of my top ten peated scotch.

I bought a bottle of Curiositas yesterday 12_27_14 and its 46% If it was 40 I would'nt have bought it! Any way its one of the best bottles of the year! The price was $65.00 though.I like it over laphroaigh and ardbeg! I think a non peat drinker could like this. I like the subtle sweet nutty taste along with the smoke!

27th December 2014

Superb

All at once medicinal yet sweet, light yet full, rich but still still clean. A sheer delight.

13th December 2014

great value

good smoky rich drink, get a bottle and get stuck in !

9th December 2014

It may be inexpensive, but it's not cheap

Peaty, smoky on the nose, oily and rich on the palate, spicy long finish - there's also some subtle sweetness that reveals itself slowly. Much to enjoy in here - but you must like peated whiskies really to get the benefit.

Отличный солод! Прекрасная цена за по настоящему хороший копчёный виски! Довольно мягкий насыщенный, хороший баланс дыма и ёда = отличный пример копчёного материкового виски !+++

17th October 2014

easy drinking peat

best cheap peated whiskey by a mile.

Surprising from nose to finish

This is one of my personal favorites, first sipped in Granton-on-Spey, last dram of the night... and what a dram it was. The nose has a deceptively strong sense of peat and smoke, but it is not as strong as you would think once it hits your palate, it becomes a juxtaposition of sweet and smoke, and the finish lingers well after your done. I love that the taste totally surprises in comparison to the nose, a good and unique whisky.

Great flavor great value

I'm thoroughly impressed by this wizzo. I've had plenty of peated scotch but at the cost of the Curiositas nothing comes close. Well at least not a the outlet I purchase from.

16th April 2014

Just great

What else needs to be said

8th February 2014

A nose full of fresh and sweet hospital

I just had to laugh out loud while trying this dram and reading the label that states it is "particularly unusual for a Speyside malt". I disagree with Mymic that this is something Dalwhinnie or Highland Park people might enjoy. To me it is simply a unique palate of acquired tastes that combines more nastiness then any peated Islands whisky I've tried before. Love it though

31st January 2014

Lower proof

Don't appreciate the donwngrade!

2nd January 2014

Books and their covers

You know what they say. This packaging is pretty tired. Needs a refresh like my grandma's kitchen... but no one can cook like her... no one. For the price, this is a damn good dram. It's a Speyside by nature, but I swear I taste some lowland grass along side it's obvious Islay peat. Not sure this one 'belongs' to any Scottish region. Maybe it's just "Scottish" That'll do pig.

3rd July 2013

Mymic

If you're a fan of highland park, or the dalwhinnie, and are looking for something with more smoke, this is the dram for you, truly wonderful.

28th January 2013

Lagavulin-esque

Agree with previous reviewer that this a great whisky for the price. The nose reminds me of the classic Lagavulin 16, and the palette doesn't dissapoint with a lingering finish

24th May 2012

Fabulous!

This is a great dram, with an amazing smoke in the nose as well as in the palate. Finish is absolutely incredibile with chewy smoke leaving on a tongue an impression of white chocolate. Buy it at once!!!
