Benchmark by name, benchmark by nature. This really is one for the more well Bourbon producers to beat, and despite its status as an outsider, really warrants some attention - especially if cocktails are on the menu.
Aromatic and quite sweet. Soft toasty spices, salted caramel and vanilla pod earthiness.
A creamy spirit carrying custard, toffee apple and biscuity notes.
Cinnamon, chocolate digestives and tangerine.
Bought it, like it. Will buy more.
Quite easy sip, lots of corn, pear, a hint of black pepper and some caramel on the palate. Some barley, sweet cornflakes and possibly a hint of rye towards the end. Quite mellow and easy to sip, worth the money and worth the try.
Here in the US it's among the cheapest "straight bourbons" (an important legal definition, especially important when venturing into bottom shelves). I was surprised. Buffalo Trace distillery, from my research it's 70%+ corn, <10% rye and 5%+ malt (can't verify). No, it's not a favorite or a standout - it's just a great budget default if you are "down and out". For me, I'd buy Ezra or Evan for a few bucks more, but I enjoy discovering budget options, so this is a nice find. I got a good chuckle when Ralfy reviewed this genuinely thinking that it's 8 years old :) No, it's "No. 8", that's all. And it does have an age statement - in small print: "aged 3 years" :) But hey, Ralfy has one of the most trustworthy palates, so it's great!
I think it may be one of my favorite whiskeys, I live in Kentucky and have tried them all! The taste is smooth, which is not typical of bourbon, a high rye content gives it that great spice taste. Compared to the bourbons that are 2-3 times the cost it is a no brainer. My go to along with the single barrel Buffalo Trace from the same family
It's an ok bourbon, similar to Jim Beam...at first, but then there is this unpleasant bitterness not unlike JD. it's as if they bought JD and put it into these bottles.
