The Darkness strikes again, but this time, it's armed with something a little bit different and rather exciting indeed. This 17-year-old Ben Nevis single malt Scotch whisky was finished for three months in a specially built 50-litre cask which previously held Palo Cortado sherry! Palo Cortado is a bit of an enigma, beginning life ageing as a fino or amontillado sherry under flor, but it inexplicably starts ageing oxidatively like an oloroso. The result is a sherry that has qualities of both oloroso and amontillado, and consequently, a very interesting Darkness bottling.
Waxy, grassy malt and strawberry cheesecake ice cream. Red rope liquorice and a hint of mint develop with a core of caramel and malt loaf.
Grainy, rich malt with more fruit developing - fruit salad with some leather on the tail.
Walnut and date cake gives way to crisp green apple.
