Unveiled in 2014, the 15 Year Old Single Barrel Sherry Cask is a wonderful sight from Balvenie - single malt Scotch whisky fully matured in Sherry casks. These are released in batches of no larger than 800 bottles from a single cask, each one being hand numbered. Although no two casks are the same, and therefore won't produce an identical single malt, the casks are carefully selected by Balvenie's Malt Master and feature a consistent, rich, spiced character, complimented by hints of elegant oak.
Dense Christmas cake with icing, full of sticky, syrupy dried fruits, cherries, finely chopped nuts and grated nutmeg. Flamed orange peel, ginger, a hint of struck match (but only very subtle in the sample we tasted), fresh orange segments and plums develop.
Big old fashioned Sherry matured character, more bread-like fruitcake, malt loaf and nutty Oloroso. Slightly bitter and rum-like, superb.
Spicy fruitcake with cocoa.
Classic Sherry matured whisky, really top stuff.
Bit too syrupy for me
Full and deep flavors.... Easily my top recommendation for an enjoyable dram during winter's short and frosty days. Master of Malts' tasting notes are spot on.... The Balvenie hit a home run with this expression!
Approachable, very sweet on the nose, ozone post-match but no real smoke, citrus, ready for the tongue. Touch sharp on the tongue, familiar Sherry, touch too sweet, happily bitter but not overwhelming, fresh nutmeg. Lingers, too sweet, but makes a good dessert before bed. I like it, but the lingering sweet/bitter puts me off by a star.
I am so excited to try this whisky. I absolutely love the Balvenie 12 year DoubleWood. Nose Sherry obviously, orange is quite prevalent, some sort of sugary thing. It's like Christmas! The Glenfarclas 25 was top quality on all counts, but the nose on this is a lot more interesting. There's so much going on. Palate Sherry again. It's top quality though. Fruity and nutty. This is special. Finish Spices. It's a medium-long finish. This is beautifully matured. This is on par with the Glenfarclas 25. Easily 9/10 no question about it. I'll be picking up a bottle of this very soon.
Finally a darm that is worth for the price.
