Balvenie The Sweet Toast

Stories always start at the beginning (unless they're one of those purposely confusing stories like Memento or those Funnybones books - it's never explained why they're skeletons!), and this is the introductory release from The Balvenie Stories range! These releases all give light to events and people in Balvenie's past and present - this one, for example, takes inspiration from apprentice malt master Kelsey McKechnie and her idea to import virgin oak barrels from Kentucky and deeply toast them at the distillery's cooperage. They were then filled with Balvenie's ex-bourbon oak aged whisky for a finishing period, resulting in... Well, this very whisky you see here!

Tasting Note by The Producer

Nose Lusciously malty with some sweet fudge, followed by citrusy and oak vanilla aromas with layers of spicy oak notes of ginger and cinnamon.

Palate Candied orange and lemon peel, vanilla toffee and butterscotch, layers of blossom honey, some melted brown sugar and oak spices at the end.

Finish Rich and malty with gentle waves of oak vanilla and subtle spices.

Reviews for Balvenie 12 Year Old - The Sweet Toast of American Oak
An easy going light and sweet scotch. Good recommendation for someone that has said (oh I don’t like scotch, too smoky)
I’m always happy too see a new Scotch come through this whisky repressed bullshit Provence we call Ontario, and even happier that it’s a Balvenie.
This bottle was not what I expecting, but still just as lovely as all the others I have had by this ever evolving distillery.
My amateur notes:
Nose: sweet chard oak, fresh hay, honeysuckle, candied nuts.
Taste: toffee, oak, malty, (apple-cinnamon oatmeal)
Finish: short, dry, sweet.

Great whisky at the price
Really like this Balvenie! Lovely sweet notes alongside a smoother vanilla. I don't get the citrus so much but that's probably just me. Great whisky for the price.

Hubby loves it
I bought my Husband a bottle for Christmas and he loves it (he hates smokey peaty malts) he likes it so much I've bought him another for his birthday on Wednesday

Good option to have in the cabinet at price.
You have to work for this one, leaving the dram in the glass to breath and warm with your hand is important, otherwise initial on the nose results in burn from the alcohol, and hard to pick the scents. Once warmer, slight vanilla is detected and gentle oak spice.
Taste takes a moment to develop on the tongue, short lived toffee sweetness gives way to a lemon bitterness with an underlying oak note that lasts through to the short finish. Ok at the price point, but worth paying more for Caribbean Cask or the amazing PortWood.

Very smooth
If you want to get your partner to share your love of whisky this is a great bottle to try … I think some of the negative comments are probably due to more educated pallets… a bit like trying Indian food for the fist time ( Korma ) loving it and moving on to the hotter tastier dishes..

Disappointing
A bit disappointing. Like the others have said the nose takes a bit of time to come through but then it really smells great. It’s very sweet and has a strong alcohol hit. It actually reminds me of Dranbuie! The finish is very short. I’m hoping it will improve with leaving it a few weeks but if you’re a balvenie fan, stick with the standard 12
