Aultmore 20yo 1996

One of the many limited edition bottlings released as part of La Maison du Whisky's 60th Anniversary celebrations, this is a 20 year old single malt from the Aultmore distillery, finished (aptly) in Sauternes casks.

Tasting Note by The Producer

Nose Simultaneously firm and unctuous. Initially, malted barley reigns supreme. It then develops into magnificent notes of candied fruit, noble spices (coriander, cardamom) and chocolate. The longer it is left to breathe, the more splendid the nose becomes. Now exotic (mango, passion fruit), it lingers on to candied citrus fruit (tangerine, orange) and heady florals (rose petals).

Palate Dense, concentrated. Just as sumptuous as the nose, the attack is spicy (pepper, cloves) and fruity (persimmon, guava), with tones of rancio (cherry eau de vie). The mid-palate is influenced by Sauternes wine, which stamps the palate with its honey and praline flavours. Lavish (chervil, verbena, lime blossom), it gradually reveals new fruit flavours (melon, green grapes, white peaches).

Finish Long, silky. A fine layer of plum completely covers the palate. At the same time, pulpy tannins (grape, Mirabelle plums) give it plenty of substance. Autumnal, it lingers on to notes of fresh walnuts, moss and mushrooms. The retro-nasal olfaction perfectly combines malted barley and Sauternes wine. The empty glass is a rare concentration of fruit, herbs and flowers (lilac, iris).

Reviews for Aultmore 20 Year Old 1996 - Exceptional Cask Series (La Maison du Whisky 60th Anniversary)
A bit pricey but good.
Sugary. Sweet. Peppery spice hitting the roof of the mouth. Full. Not that okay but carries a strong spiciness. When it evolves in the bottle, it gets even more thicker and rounded.
The reason this could have been picked up by LMDW is perhaps the 7yr maturation in sauternes casks that makes it unique or perhaps Aulmore OB 20+ was a rarity then. Not sure.

Too pricey for what it's worth
Sugary sweet. Peppery. Lot of cloves. The high ABV adds more intensity. But the finish and the nose are not as great as the bottler's description. For a whisky that's 20yo, I felt the finish was a bit short. I paid about 600SG$ at LMDW but it's not worth that price
