Arran are changing pace just a little bit with their third batch of 12 Year Old Cask Strength single malt Scotch whisky. It features a higher percentage of whisky matured in Sherry casks than previous releases, this one being drawn from 5 first-fill sherry butts, 13 second-fill sherry hogsheads and 31 bourbon barrel. This Island whisky is bottled at 53.9% abv.
Nose: Those little bags of dried fruits, but the ones with the exotic, tropical fruits, not just raisins and bits of apple. It smells like those.
Palate: Subtle citrus zest and dark chocolate. Roasted coffee. Quite nutty too.
Finish: It grows hot on the finish.
Overall: Rather complex and certainly enjoyable, perhaps with a couple drops of water.

I was lucky enough to receive a batch 2 and oh my goodness! I had no expectations but this one blew me away. It needs a good watering down, preferably with some snow or a bit of ice scraping to bring out some soft sweetness of creamy butterscotch. Great balance of the punch of 53.6% alcohol and a warm soft sweet blanket.
