Powerfully peaty and immensely satisfying, Ardbeg's Corryvreckan is what happens when the distillery of Islay's Kildalton Coast aims to make a whisky with a particularly medicinal style than its usual expressions. Aptly named after a nearby whirlpool, Corryvreckan is an intense dram that we simply love.
Sticking plasters, buttery, creamy, roast chicken crisps, herbal, almost a hint of pine…
Cream, spices, tingling, fresh fruit, medicinal, plasters, Clementines. Orange peels.
Salty, more medicinal, smoked meats, peat is fleeting, tarmac, chilli, salt.
Astonishing.

If I had to pick one item to be in my liquor cabinet for the rest of my days, this would be it. All the flavors fit so perfectly, the smoke is outstanding, and the cask-strength bottling wins outright. I'd be interested in comparing some of the Laphroaig offerings if they were at cask strength, but unfortunately they're not so Ardbeg wins. (Well kind of, except in reality I do get to pick more than one so....)
Why in the hell is someone reviewing a trip to Islay here? Morons. Seriously though, idiots aside, this is a great, full bodied whisky with intense peat.
Although this is relatively young whisky, I think you get real value for your money. It's amazing how Ardbeg can maintain this level of quality year after year. Praise the master blender!
I am confused why you would book a holiday based on a distillery if you clearly don't like whisky. I enjoyed this greatly. I have thou I admit never been to Islay.
You buy what you expect and so much more. A gorgeous malt with so much richness and flexibility. Enjoy it as it comes from the bottle and although the 57%, you will get a rich taste not dominated by alcohol. Impressive tastes of chocolade, fruit, all surrounded by tasteful smokey elements which are milder than the usual 10 yrs old medicine like Ardbeg. With drops of water this malt is my absolute favourite. Got it from a friend and to be true, everytime I try the bottle, I find new nuances of taste. A surprise to your nose and mouth, give it a try.
