    Ardbeg Auriverdes

A special edition single malt launched on Ardbeg Day 2014 - a day celebrated both at the Islay festival, Fèis Ìle and around the world. Auri(Gold)verdes(Green) is a name used to refer to Brazil's sports teams (including the football team, of course), but in this case it refers to the golden whisky and the iconic Ardbeg green bottle it dwells within. Striker!

This bottle was part of a private collection - if you'd like more detailed photos just get in touch!

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

Smoked bacon, Tarry ropes on a not-long-dry seashore. Loads of Vanilla. Pomegranates, Fizzy-sweets (refreshers, Sherbet Lemons) and Lemon-zest. Not convinced I’d have got Mocha, if not for the autosuggestion, but it’s definitely there now I think about it.

    Palate

Initially sweet, restrained, more of that bacon, but this time it’s been cured with Muscovado sugar and maybe a touch of Juniper? Progresses through the inevitable onslaught of peat, but it’s there in a slightly different way – more ‘high’, medicinal phenols than we've come to expect with Ardbeg. From the palate alone, I’m not even sure I’d peg this as Ardbeg – I might be tempted to go two distilleries further down the coast…

    Finish

Long. Cocoa, Charred corners of a pulled pork butt, becomes more ashy as it fades, but clearly from good honest casks albeit with charred heads.

    Overall

It’s good. Funnily though, as the spirit’s not being bombarded with finishes/extreme cask-techniques the difference between this and the 10yo is strangely pronounced. There are palpable elements of Bowmore, and Laphroaig in this dram, whilst it does absolutely retain the overall Ardbeg character we know and love. To my mind that’s a good thing.

A great surprise for one not a fan of the distillery

This whisky surprised me very much. I tasted smoked pork and notable sweetness. I don't like any Ardbeg but I very much enjoyed this one. In fact I don't enjoy any islay other than Lagavulin, which is my favorite. Although I do drink Laphroaig quite often as it's my girlfriend's dram of choice.

Much ado about nothing (perhaps a bit)

I had the luck tasting it before ripping my wallet off for a bottle on ebay (which would have been 110£ with delivery costs). Yes it a pleasant whisky, less Ardbegish than expected but far overpriced compared with the quality. It's too sweet sometimes, especially the finish and tastes aren't so easy to distinguish. At 50£ a bottle, the Corryvreckan is way above this one (Uigeadail also). Thanks but no thanks

    Silly

Look at the comments below. The Ardbeg craze have got people into forcing themselves to enjoy stupidly young whisky for expensive prices. The Uigeadail and the 10 year old are the only decent bottles these days and even those are overpriced.

    One of the greats

We will look at its extinction with great sadness as we have with the Alligator, the Beast, and other truly great expressions of Ardbeg. I was fortunate enough to get 2 bottles. One I got at %15 off on Robbie Burns day :)
