Aberfeldy 21 Year Old

Aberfeldy 21 Bottling Note

Launched in October of 2005, this 21 year old lies at the core of the Aberfeldy range and is something of a flagship for the brand. A superb example of what the distillery can produce.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Honey, fruity. Thick malt, enlivened by a fresh, zesty quality.

Palate: Smooth, vanilla, undulating, refined smoke.

Finish: Peters out gently, perhaps some ripe white peach notes and a good wave of honey.

Aberfeldy 21 Year Old Reviews

A malt to please the pallat.

A wonderful full bodied aroma escaped from the bottle when opened. Fruity, little smokey, with a subtle sweetness. Leave this in the glass for a few minutes and the aroma intensifies.

A superb drink

Not normally a scotch drinker but aberfeldy 21 has changed my mind. To me it has become something. Smooth and easy on the palate.

Top 10 Whisky of all time!

Another smooth, easy drinking and very mellow 21 year old. The 16 is a permanent feature in my whisky cabinet. This 21 year old expression from Aberfeldy will now sit along side it.

Great drink

Very smooth and easy on the palate, not a big single malt person. But I have been converted

Excellent smoothest I have ever drank

Too bad I've only been drinking this while I've been drinking other alcohol first.. It's a nice fruity whisky from what I can remember but you might need a little water.

A very interesting dram.
cherry notes on the nose with vanilla and dark chocolate.
On the palate it's mouth coating dark Chocolate with raisins honey and a hint of smoke lingering in the back ground.
A spicy medium finish with honey.

A wonderful nectar

One of the greats..When Aberfeldy puts out a refined well aged and matured whisky as this 21 yr is shows the quailty and the stamp of approval that this Distillery can keep up with the likes of Lagavulin,Dalwhinnie and a few others.Aqua Vitea

an aged sweet peaty yet full body

I was having the royal salute 21 a fine blended spirit but I saw the aberfeldy 21 on the shelves and just wanna taste the difference. Well the single malt certainly has got much more story to tell. full bodied honey taste with peaty flavour. worth it

Excellent and gorgeous.

It is the best one I have ever tried. Congratulations.

Single Malt Lover.....

Such a beautiful experience like a smooth drip mix of honey and smoky oak. Take a sip, close your eyes, feel the celestial sphere and enjoy its texture with your taste buds... Super recommended.

Aberfeldy 21

En fruktig mild smak, endast smakat i lätt berusat tillstånd dock. Vill ändå påstå att det finns bra mycket bättre whiskys för pengen då den var lite spritig och inte nådde riktigt ända fram..

Best single

Very smooth worth every penny

Indescribably smooth with more than enough subtlety for me. Agreed that 40% abv could be higher -- but don't let that stop you.

This Scotch it's driving me crazy WOW how good is it!! It's beautiful

I enjoy all 3 - 12, 18 & 21. This is my all time favorite.

3rd August 2016

May be difficult to appréhend due to its complexity. Suffer from its low alcohol I believe it would be muche better at 46% abv.

Love the mix of smoke, peat and vanilla

This Scotch in my view reaches the optimal blend of complexity in smoke, peat and vanilla. It is well balanced and just a pleasure on the pallet and the nose.

Nice for non-whisky drinkers.

In short, this whisky is very balanced and very smooth with depth, but there is nothing about this whisky that lingers in the memory.

Even at the prior 99 dollar pricing, this was a questionable value buy, but now at the current 149 dollar US price, it's a definite no buy. The only reason I would buy another bottle is if I were trying to purchase a nice single-malt scotch for a non-whisky drinker. I consider this has a better option than many blended whiskies out there.

Don't get me wrong... this is an excellent scotch. If I didn't have to think about pricing, I would happily take this as a daily drinker dram, and it would join the ranks of Glengoyne 18 and Hibiki 17 in the group of extremely balanced, tasty and utterly inoffensive but more expensive whiskies that almost any palate would enjoy.

simply a superb dram

27th May 2016

Very good value

For the price you would be hard pushed to find anything of a similar age. It is very complex but in my view better without the addition of water and as Ralfy suggests benefits from leaving it in the glass for a minute for each year of maturation.

Best Scotch I've ever tasted.

Due to the price, however, it's for Christmas eve only. Don't know about fruits, underlying flavors, etc, but I do know what I like. Been drinking malts for about 15 years and can usually find something good about most. Specs had it on sale a few weeks ago for $100.
I've been through 3 bottles in 3 years. I have to hide them from my 3 sons - in - law.

Smooth and complex

Very smooth and great depth, for me. Lots of fruit, honey, confectionery and cream. Lucky enough to be local to Gibraltar and can get the Aberfeldy 21 for £60. Lucky me! I can't think of much better that I can get for much cheaper, particularly of this age. The Glengoyne 21, I'd suggest but that's a huge £15 more expensive, in Gib. You can hate me, if you like. We all made our choices.

Easy to drink!

Fruity and gentle but I would say consider to the price it's not really worth it. You can find better for a lower price.

Worth the Penny

Got it from local whiskey shop. Very smooth and thoroughly enjoyed.

Wonderful for the price

Very distinct flavours, with beautiful smoke. For the price you can't go wrong.

I'm not a professional whisky drinker...

But I have a cabinet full of mostly highland single malts and I enjoy the variety even within the region. I picked up a bottle of Aberfeldy 21 tonight, having never tried the 12. It has a striking nose to it, and honey and citrus really do feel fairly well presented here. It coats the inside of the glass with a malty-syrupy quality and once you take a sip, it does the same to your palate. It latches on and lingers for a pleasantly medium duration. For a 40% ABV bottling, it has a decent amount of warmth and is well suited to a cool winter's evening. Nothing about this whisky is overpowering, which can be right up some drinker's alley. It stands out in its balance and I am enjoying it quite well right now typing this.

If you're looking at the age to buy your bottles, chances are $129 or so isn't going to cause you sticker shock for a 21 year expression. I don't think its a forgettable experience, as suggested, but everyone's palate is different and I think you owe it to yourself to try it if you're curious about it. You won't be disappointed. There are many good things going on in this whisky that you shouldn't pass up!

I can't really get excited about this's not bad at all but neither is is anything special (not to me anyway) does have some very nice flavours on the nose and taste - honey, spice, vanilla hints - and a reasonably smooth finish...I like it but it's not setting my world on fire...perfectly pleasant but forgettable...probably the Scotch equivalent of a Billly Joel album

21st October 2014

Beautiful dram. People saying it's smoky are talking absolute nonsense. It's everything I hoped the 12YO was - smooth, honeyed and with a stunningly mellow finish. Lovely stuff.

26th March 2014

they all have colds in your nose but the whiskey was absolutely great

17th November 2013

Overpowering Smokiness

Good single malt but the age and therefore price weigh it down. Nice, wood flavor that is hidden behind a strong smokiness. This scotch has nearly no nose and a very clean/dry finish. I propose that if this is your drink maybe try Glenmorangie Origonal 10 year along with a nice cigar and you will likely be more satisfied and have more money left in your pocket. If you can't or don't enjoy tobacco try the Isley Lagavulin.

Fine Whisky at reasonable price

One of the finest whiskeys I've tasted. Smooth and goes down well and leaves a nice taste afterwards.

26th July 2013

Definitely worth the price

Yes, it's an inexpensive foray into the realm of 21 year old scotches but don't let the price fool you. It's a very nice whisky at a very affordable price. About. $40 at Specs. As always, taste is subjective. I think it's a great buy.

23rd April 2013

Excellent wee nip

Nice and smokey! A great nip to impress anyone with!

21st March 2013

meh, not worth it, even at Spec's bargain of $50/bottle

Smooth and a little sweet but no real nose and no finish. A drop or two of water opens up the oak on the finish but this isn't worth buying at any price, tho the deal at spec's is tempting if you don't want to drop the cash on something like The Balvenie 21y Portwood.

Honestly, the Dewar's 12y was MUCH better and the same price. Lesson learned: "Don't buy scotch at discount prices; there's always a reason!"

Without a doubt the best scotch I have had up or on the rocks. My quest say it is the best they have tasted.
