Wood's is made from the finest sugar cane and distilled in Guyana, South America. Bottled at 57% abv, it is one of the highest percentage volume dark rums out there right now, at least at this price.
Its smooth enough to enjoy neat, but also a killer choice for cocktails.
Toffee, cinnamon, cloves and pepper spice on the nose with thick caramel notes.
Muscovado sugar, soft toffee and just a hint of the spice detected on the nose. This is very smooth, belying its hefty abv.
Surprisingly short but thick and syrupy toffee notes abound.
A rich, dark rum with a high abv that retains its smoothness. Would work well in a dark and stormy, despite the fact Wood's is distilled in Guyana, and not Bermuda.
Been drinking this for decades. Can be sipped straight on a cold day. Mixed 50/50 with stones ginger wine to “cure” a cold. OK, not sure it really cures the cold, but you notice it less !
This is a beautifully smooth dark rum but with a kick in its tail. I love it best on the rocks, does slowly to enjoy the hues and tones of this king of rums. A warning though, a couple of large measures of this will give you a headache unless you drink plenty of water alongside. It's also great mixed with ice cold Pepsi Max, where it forms a beautiful brown head that looks like Guinness but tastes nothing like it, just gorgeous creamy rum.
I've encountered a few old naval ratings in my time and to a man they swore by Woods. It was our late night "Spoof" shot of choice. I find its warming flavour very comforting, but there's nothing subtle about Woods, none of that "hints of" malarkey; no sophisticated, lingering finish: just the baked sugar, toasted almond and boozy raisin taste of Christmas cake with toffee sauce, a hint of licorice then a short but significant hit of alcohol. If a 25 Yr old El Dorado is a scalpel, then Woods is a chainsaw, followed by a pickaxe, followed by the front bucket of a JCB! It makes a smashing mixer too - it's hard to overpower a flavour this big even in a "very" dark and stormy (sorry Goslings)! I don't drink Woods all the time these days, I don't think my liver would take it, but I always keep a bottle handy for when nothing else will satisfy. Save it for when the grown ups come to play, pop your "rum connoisseur" hat in the wash, and just enjoy!
What a drink not for the faint hearted if you drink rum
Spent a long time in the Navy and left just after they stopped the tot. Woods is the only rum that comes close to the tot despite what others claim.
